If you were building a new house and wanted music in various zones, what is the best system? I know sonos is good because it's wireless but with the ability to hardwire everything, is there a more cost effective option? I'd like maybe three or four zones with the ability to play music/tv at the same time.

hardwired is always always ALWAYS the better option.

I'd agree but what type of hardware? Is it as simple as getting a receiver with multiple zones? I haven't done much digging but most only have two zones?

It depends what kind of audio quality you are looking for.

I'm a big fan of Chromecast audio to sync speakers. If you already have a receiver you can hook up a Chromecast audio to it.

If you want to expand to more zones you can buy a few small amps like this:

...And plug Chromecast into them. That's what I do. Speakers are all hardwired, but I control music and individual zone volume from my phone.

Is this efficient? It seems like that would work but I want something that isn't "rigged". Also, am I streaming it from my phone or my home network? I'd like to just control it from my phone.

Sonos bro. Just do it. It's amazing.

It costs a lot money to run wires and buy a receiver that can do multiple zones. Sonos is designed to do this flawlessly.

Playbar and sub $1400
Two play 1s is 400 if you want 5.1

So 1800 for your tv room system.
Then depending on how big the rooms are you can spend anywhere from 200 on a play 1 to 500 on a play 5 per zone. The play 1 is such a great speaker I would recommend starting there. Then if you need more sound you can add another play one and stereo pair them or buy a play five and stereo pair another zone later.

So for four zones would cost you at a minimum $2000. I'd be willing to bet you can't buy comparable speakers/receivers and wire them up to all your rooms for that. And I really doubt it will be as easy to control as the sonos controller is.

I'm definitely leaning towards Sonos. I'd prefer hard wired speakers. Any experience with the sonos connect amp? Do they make those in 5.1?

That's the route I would go. Hardwire some architectural speakers and run them back to one location. I'd use connect amps in the rooms you just want music. If you want a 5.1 system I'd buy a traditional AVR and put a SONOS connect on it to make it a SONOS zone.

You could also use a playbar a couple of play1's and a sub for 5.1 sound. But I'd rather have an AVR to handle the video switching.

You could even do just a 2 channel amp into a speaker selector on a budget. There are a ton of possibilities at a multitude of price points. The only way to start narrowing it down would be to choose:

1) number of zones
2) number of sources
2a) how many different sources in different zones at once?

More details are better, but that would be enough to get started.

Are you looking for something that is "good enough " or are you serious about sound quality ( audiophile)?

My speakers are hard wired throughout the house. I've got a channel selector in my media closet along with volume dials in each room. I use Sonos to control my music. I've only got a play1 that I take out front if I'm playing with the kids but otherwise just use the hard wired speakers

Definitely not an audiophile but want decent quality and ease of use. I also want to hide the speakers in the ceiling or wall.

How is your system tied to Sonos? A connect? Do you need one for each zone?

Check out the Nuvo P3100. A single component that can operate 3 different zones. I had it installed in my recently built home and it has been fantastic. Cost is about $1400.

Ceiling speakers are garbage. May as well just not have music. Unless, of course, you lay on the floor to listen to them.

Nuvo is releasing a wifi speaker and soundbar next month that will work with the portfolio line. But for $100 more than a P3100 you can have 3 SONOS connect amps which have a little more power. Plus you can line level in a source to the main zone and have it rebroadcast to the other zones with virtually no delay. With the P3100 you would have to plug that source into each zone locally or you will have a delay. Having one zone ahead of another sucks on gameday.
