just upgraded from 50mb to 1gb with AT&T and the technician is at my house and its only getting 100mb to my computer
turns out its because my cpu is 5 years old and only has a 10/100 network card
is this something thats easy to swap out and how much $$ am i looking at to support a 1gb connection?

Any of these
Dead easy to do - turn off and unplug, open box, figure out how to take the blank plate off the end of the slot, plug in card, close box, plug in cable, plug in power, turn on. I'd be shocked if you had any driver issues with any consumer NIC, but there should be a driver CD with the card.
Personally, I like Intel, but I don't think you can really go wrong with anything.

stupid question but thinking of getting a wifi extender
have a two story house and my router is in my office upstairs in the corner.
when looking online they are saying some only support 2.4 ghz and some do both 2.4 and 5. does that matter? should i get the one that supports both to be future proofed?

You seriously have a 1gb connection?
Posted on 4/22/15 at 8:26 pm to ColdDuck
Yeah apparently. Or I will
Att gig a power here in dallas. Company is based here so I'm getting it
1gb upload too. Problem is my desktop is a 2006 Dell so installer said the machine is way outdated to handle that much speed and won't get the full benefits.
Lol
Company pays for my internet so why the f not right?

1. replacing a NIC card in a desktop is usually cake. Remover cover, remove card, insert new 100/1000 card.
2. "Installers" are the last source of quality info IMO. Not saying that Field Techs don't do their job well or have a grasp, but unless it's specialized, there is usually a reason they aren't 3rd or even 2nd level analysts. Countless times I've witnessed field techs just make up stuff because they don't have the right answer. That said, certain things can slow down your speed, but if you have a 1Gb/s connection and pop in a 100/1000 NIC card you'll be fine.
3. I have a hard time believing you'll get 1Gb/s down and 1Gb/s up on any home connection but that's just me and I don't live in Dallas. I'd like to do real tests on it - not speedtest.net, etc.

Thanks for the info
Yeah I don't care about the upload nor do I need 1gb down
I'm fine honestly with anything over 100mb. That should work just fine

100 fiber is awesome, but you should get what you pay for.

Done it. Have EPB 1 gig service. I mostly get around 400-600 mbps up and down from most servers. I very rarely get near my speedtest results.

can you tell me why 50Mbps was not enough for you? Especially with computing equipment that old.

To get 1gig for the price that I pay for 100Mb..Who wouldn't

If it required a service call to my house, required me to change out NICs or PCs, upgrade wireless, etc.
Then I wouldn't.

What ISP do you have that was installed without someone coming by..?

I agree that not having a 100/1000 card is old, but no one said he HAD to upgrade it

upgrade wireless
He wants to get better wireless

Are you that guy that always white knights for Cox..

not cox specifically, but the farce that is 1Gbps to the home.
You have an issue with that?
Should have said another service call to my home.

yea I was looking at the 1 gig, but we decided on the 300 MB for a little cheaper.

Yeah, after the TCP overhead, the bottleneck is usually going to be in the router's WAN to LAN, which would probably be evident even with speedtest.

If I paid under $100 for 1Gb, and got above 800Mb, I'd be ecstatic...

I have 100 at my home from Cox..I get 90-118..I'm good with that...

So if you swapped from DSL to Fiber, you wouldn't expect anyone to come out to your house..?

See this is the root of my argument, why? Why would you be ecstatic? Just because the speedtest shows high numbers?
What are your tangible improvements between say 90Mbps and 1Gbps? What noticeable differences? Other than mathematically there is a theoretical 910Mbps "speed increase"
