Need recs on a good camera not DSLR

So my iPhone pictures just don't cut it. Looking for something reasonably priced that I can use for taking close proximity pictures most of the time. I don't really have the need for a big bulky SLR, so hopefully y'all can point me in the right direction. I mostly want something for fish pictures on the boat and just some closer proximity pictures most of the time. Kind of a vague question but I appreciate it.

Yeah I'm not trying to get crazy zoom shots or anything, just good quality close proximity pictures of my dog and my hobbies. Thanks

How much are you wanting to spend? That would help.

400 is probably my limit but maybe more if there's a good deal out there

I suppose it depends
hated lugging around a bulky slr myself, switched over to the sony line
the reason for this line is, they start fast so you don't miss a shot and the pic is pretty sharp/hi-res
LINK
I keep it in a logitech zip pouch
anyways, can't beat the pictures nor the price $200
controls are straight forward, fit's in your pocket too.

399 will get you a first generation Sony RX100. This is the best compact camera line on the market.
There are 4 generations now, but people still buy and use the first. I own one (so definitely contact me if a used version is appealing), but I'm about to upgrade to a Fuji X-series. The newest version is about 950 bucks.

Sony Alpha a5000
Samsung NX500
Samsung looks like a better camera but without a viewfinder. Only has the lCD screen for viewing
Looks like a good deal.

+1. I bought the RX100 M3 two years ago. Fantastic camera which also takes great video.
I didn't want a DSLR either. Just wanted a point and shoot that took really good pics and the RX100 fits the bill. Love that I can easily keep it in the glove compartment in the car and have easy access to it. Alot of venues won't even let you take in bigger cameras anymore.

I'll echo the RX100, and also throw in a Fuji X100S. You can probably find one for around $500 used, but it's a better camera than the previous version (X100) which is closer to $350-$400.

I'm about to get an X100T most likely.

I love mine. I had an X100, then traded up for an XE-2 with a 35mm prime and 18-55. I liked it, but didn't seem to use it as much as I did the X100. So about a month ago, I traded the XE-2 and lenses for the X100T. Very happy with it.

Less than $400 for the body and lens and less than $500 to add the telephoto lens you will get a fast camera system with two lenses that has image quality on par with any of the non-full frame SLR cameras at a fraction of the size. I dropped all my Nikon SLR gear for Olympus mirrorless a couple of years ago with no regrets.
I personally use an Olympus E-P5 and a Olympus E-M1 with Olympus 14-150 and 17/1.8 and Panasonic 25/1.4 lenses. I've had several other lenses like the 12-40/2.8 and the Sigma 19/2.8 and 60/2.8 but sold them for dissuse. I owned a Sony a6000 with the Zeizz 16-70/4 lens which was a nice combo but I found I liked the way the Olympus bodies handled better and there really wasn't that great of a image quality difference with the larger sensor in the Sony mostly because the Micro 4/3 lenses are cheaper and better than the Sony lens lineup which more than made up the difference for me.

Another option would be the Olympus TG-3 or TG-4 off the Olympus site. Some of the best Waterproof cameras you can get. I own a TG-3 and before that a TG-820 which is now on the bottom of lake Harding. I use them when paddling and love them. Invest in a floating strap

Don't know how much longer the 20% off is good for on Olympus's site since it's a President's day sale. But act fast if you are interested.

Canon SL1. Smallest DSLR in the world (when it launched at least) and it has been getting major discounts ($450 range) because the SL2 is about to come out.
