It's been awhile since I've bought a computer and really don't know what the basic specs consist of anymore. We won't use it for gaming. Mostly just internet browsing, photo stuff, youtube, etc. Doesn't need to be anything spectacular. Looking for both desktop and laptop.

TIA

Walk in to Best Buy.

Close eyes.

Spin 3 Times.

Point.

Buy that one.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need both? You can hook a large monitor to a laptop with an HDMI cable and work on two screens or buy a docking station for the laptop to work on a larger screen/multiple screens and use a full size keyboard.

Aren't desktops usually faster, etc? At least for the same price point as a laptop? Desktop for the important stuff. Laptop for kids to mess around on.

So you're saying they're all basically the same?

I hate that Dell doesn't do the 'design your own computer' anymore.

Desktop for basic needs it's hard to go wrong even on the low end. Laptops you need to really look at the specs. Laptops are often skewed either for portability/longer battery life or computing power, it's hard to do both in the low end. Just decide which of those is important to you in a laptop.

At the same price point, usually, but laptops are more than fast enough for what you described your usage to be. I'm not trying to talk you into either, just wondering why you wanted one of each. It's much cheaper to have one laptop that can do it all and add a monitor for larger screen than to buy two entirely different units. And the kids would get more use out of a tablet.

I bought my wife and daughter a Mac Mini a couple of years ago to replace an ancient desktop. They use Macs in the school system here, so I wanted my daughter to be able to use what they use at school. We do have an old laptop, but it rarely gets used. iPads for portable stuff, and the Mac for working. If I were you, I'd skip the laptop and get a tablet. Plus you can throw a ton of educational apps on a tablet. Our school system also has a Bring Your Own Device program, and they sent out a list of apps they use during the time each week. I think all but one or two of them were free.
