Not bad. It's like an HP stream but with a real SSD with usable storage.

Would be nice if it had 4GB of RAM and a Pentium instead, but I'm glad to see more of these sub-$400 clunkers getting the SSD treatment.

I won't ever give Toshiba any more of my money. We bought one of their budget laptops once. It stopped working within about 6 months. It was used very sparingly by my spouse and was always kept in a case when not in use.

Toshiba wouldn't honor the manufacturers warranty. Frick Toshiba.

What reason did Toshiba give for not honoring the warranty?

I'm heading to Fry's in a few hours. I'm going to look around and see what else is out there. I liked what I read about the one I linked. Was curious what those here thought. I know some of you are very tech knowledgable. Any other laptops I should look out for at Fry's or online?

They claimed we damaged the USB port by inserting a USB device improperly. The part where the port was connected to the main board apparently came loose as there was a short which would make the whole computer go dead. It would work randomly though.

The thing was in pristine condition and there was definitely no abuse or neglect on our part that would void a warranty. My spouse knows how to use a jump drive. They just used it as a bullshite reason not to pay out as the entire mother board needed to be replaced because of this.

We had the receipt. We asked them to show us or explain to us how we damaged the device by neglect rather than normal use and they couldn't. We tried appealing the claim and spoke to supervisors by phone and email but they wouldn't budge.

Sorry you had a bad experience with Toshiba!!

Every laptop in my house is a Toshiba. I have a 5 year old Qosmio gaming laptop that still works like a champ other than for gaming..lol. It is due to the age of the GPU. My wife and son both have satellites that are about 4 years old and still work great.

Acer Aspire with i5 and 940m for $429

15.6" full HD 1080p screen, dedicated Nvidia 940m GPU, Intel i5, under $500.

Only downside is no SSD, but easy to install and cheap enough now to keep you under $500.

I've got an old Toshiba as well. It's probably 7 years old. Battery is shite by now, of course, but it still runs really well.

Or no to both? I'm not tech savvy.

Both are priced appropriately. I would favor the ASUS (not for its brand but for its specs), but being non tech-savvy, you probably won't notice the speed difference between them because the hard drive will be your bottleneck. Get either one you want, and eventually make the decision to buy a solid state drive and clone the hard drive to it.

As strange as this might sound, I've found some of the best Laptop deals at Office Depot - especially when they're upgrading their SKUs and cleaning house on older, but very capable units. Nice thing about a brick & mortar outfit is that you can go hands-on and check the ergonomics and layout. I think that's often overlooked and can't be replicated with online vendors.

300 is a good price for that. I bought this for 499. I plan on upgrading to a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo over the holidays and upgrading RAM as needed.

Has gen 5 i7, AC wireless, bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0. I plan to change out the RAM and HD later.

Sorry they screwed you, but I've never had an issue with them.

I've had my Toshiba for almost 5 years. It was a floor model I paid $240 for. It still runs great.

Actually, in some ways it runs better than my 1.5 yr old, $1500 ASUS.

That is what I do. Then I go shop online. The best deal wins.
