No idea. He knows an order of magnitude more than I do about that stuff. One of his drones is the DJI Phantom 2, and he uses it for both business and pleasure. He owns a surveillance company and has used it for fly-overs for large properties. I recall him telling me that he technically could not charge for that so it's considered a perk of using his service and equipment. He also leases a fiber connection and runs his own ISP for rural customers, so he's probably figured out some creative use of the drone for that, too. I'm sure the vast majority of the use he gets out of it is just for fun. The other day he recorded fly-over footage of the Tickfaw 200 SunBuns Powerboat Nation Party: LINK

So every douchebag on the slope, in the kayak or on the hiking trail will have a drone following them? frick that. Reason number 357 to get my CC Permit.

Heck they need to hype that more.

Watch the trailer videos for the DJI Phantom 3. It is amazing.

In addition to the autopilot/tracking stuff, you can use the tablet to draw out pre-planned flight routes on a map, etc.

And it has a better battery life too.

A friend of mine and I are considering going to Mexico this summer to see the ancient ruins (Teotihuacan, etc.) and we're thinking about buying or renting a drone for the trip. The DJI Phantom is what we've been looking at, but aside from that one drone I don't know that much about them tbh

He is going to fly over the wrong coonass shack one day. Anti-aircraft fire from a 12 gauge.

Looks like a fun time down there.

I can't imagine this would work very well in the woods. Looks nice for open spaces but how does it dodge a tree?

Apparently it doesn't. LINK

quote:

The drone will fly up to 100 feet away from the user and as close as 5 feet but it needs to be used away from obstacles. There isn’t an avoidance system, so it could potentially run into trees, power lines, people or anything else that might be in the way.

“As a user, you’d use it in outdoor environments like an open snowboarding run or surfing or a soccer field,” said Bradlow. “We’re hoping to introduce this in later versions of the product.”

Do you normally fly drones around trees, powerlines, and people?

OK, what I would really love is them putting the tracking thing in footballs. Just imagining the kicksix

not being able to fly it around these or indoors severely limits its uses. plus only has a 20 min fly time? lol nah, I'll wait until the tech catches up to make it dodge obstacles and it's able to fly longer in later versions.

right now it seems overpriced for what it can do. kinda like the apple watch

I can't wait til the first professional league adopts drone cameras.

I think it will be someone camera progressive like the NHL.

Would imagine soccer leagues will adopt them first. Hockey rinks really aren't very big, not a lot of space for a drone to fly around. Plus the play moves back and forth very quickly.

20 minute battery life with a 2 hour charge time, no swappable battery, and no collision detection.
Gotta be way in the open.
And lots of unknowns about the drone's speed, accuracy, and film quality.

Did they give a target ship date?

$499 if you preorder.

$999 when it becomes available to the public later this summer.

I don't think there's any denying that putting these things in the hands of consumers, even at give-away prices for a limited time, is a great marketing plan.

Follow me modes are out there on existing drones. I know 3D robotics has one they are betaing. There are a few DIY ones going on too, I believe.

It's a pretty cool drone for someone who wants something very easy to mess with though. That's if it lives up to it's video.

Relatively speaking, 20 minutes ain't bad. From the DJI website (Inspire model):

Emphasis on "Max". It's all about the weight of the batteries.
