Is Chromecast redundant if you have a smart tv?

Looking into getting Chromecast for a relative. But he already has a smart tv with Netflix, pandora, YouTube, etc.
I know the Chromecast will allow access to watchESPN, but is there anything additional it can do? With everything I've read, it looks like he can basically do everything with the smart tv that he will be able to do with the Chromecast, except watchespn. And there's really no point of watchespn except lsu games.
Am I missing anything?

The chromecast/roku/fire tv devices, at a minimum, do what smart TVs are supposed to do without the shittyness of Smart TV functionality.

Don't know about new smart tvs but the one I got about 3 years ago was so slow I never used it.
It was horrible to open any app.
Would imagine the various streaming boxes have much better processors / ram / optimization.

I've used stuff on his before. It's really not slow at all.
So it's looking like that's the only big advantage really?

Just to expand on what the others said, pretty much any streaming stick/device is going to have better and faster apps, more selection, and more frequent updates than the apps on a smart TV. The only reason I might say to stick with the smart TV apps is if he uses the TV remote for everything. If he uses a cable remote for everything, but then has to grab the TV remote just for the apps, then I really don't see a reason not to get a stick (other than the $30-40). I've never seen a smart TV interface that I liked.

My LG remote (LG's smart apps suck arse) can control my fire stick.

It can stream porn. Last I checked, my SmartTV couldn't do that.

I have a Roku, Xbox One, Smart TV, Fire Stick, and a Chromecast. All see use in a variety of forms.
The Chromecast is great for traveling from tv to tv, or on vacation. And it's usually, because of the phone, the fastest way to watch/find something on youtube.
The Smart TV is way too slow for anything.

So my TV that is just a year and a half old doesn't have WatchESPN or any of the apps that we use for my daughter (PBS Kids, Disney Jr, etc.)....so for that Chromecast is well worth it. If you have an Android based SmartTV (I think those were around for like 2 seconds) it may not be as useful.
Not to mention you can mirror your screen....you can also easily cast photos, music, and local video much easier than anything I've seen native to smart TVs....granted I'm sure I havent' seen it all.

I have a Samsung Smart. It is great. I also hardwired it to my router in teh tech closet which makes it flawless in operation for watching a lot of programs.

That's the problem with all the proprietary streaming devices (including Apple) and smart TVs--they don't offer the selection of channels that Roku and Amazon do. I have a Panasonic blu-ray player that I bought about five years ago that offered streaming channels like Bloomberg and The Weather Channel with the promise of many more channels to be added in the future. Still waiting for that first new channel.
Plus you pay a premium for the smart feature that is way more than the cost of a Roku of Amazon Fire box.

Depends on the Smart TV. Some are unusable. I have a Sharp I recently purchased for a room, where all I use is Netflix, and I can't tell a discernible difference between it and Apple TV

My 60" Vizio that I have in my living room freezes up when we stream using it. I also have a Panasonic plaza 56" in my bonus room that we had issues with. Since we got Amazon fire tv we haven't had any more problems. Then we have a separate 56" Samsung in our sun room that we have zero problems with. The Panasonic and Samsung both have hard wired connections now though.

I've never had a smart tv because I use Apple TV, but the smart TVs I've been exposed to had a UI that was horrible.
Smart TVs are kind of like all of the screens that car manufacturers put in. Worthless. Car manufacturers and TV manufacturers need to stop building in stuff they are not good at doing and just accomadate devices from third parties like Google, Apple and Amazon that are.

Just get a damn Chromecast.
You've wasted more money than it costs in this thread hand wringing.
A phone enabled stick will have a billion times or features and flexibility.
Smart tv apps are garbage written by the same guys gluing the circuit boards together in some Chinese province.
