I think the assumption is no one in Western world doesn't already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
That's a bad assumption I think considering two things:

If this is for entry level (e.i. teenager's first desktop), there won't be any spares.

Who wants to use an older/used/worn display if it's older than 4 years? Plenty of people in the "Western World" (whatever that means) don't have a decent display to use with a new desktop.

The true value is in OS X Yosemite, iLife, iWorks, tight tight integration built in with all your iDevices, iPhone, iPads, TV, and more and more every year. If that has no value to you this is not really a value device.

I understand that some people value that, but others (like me) would prefer loose loose integration using open standards.

If Apple would start using open cross-platform standards, I would honestly consider buying some of their stuff.

How is that 1.4Ghz processor in the Mini? Is it better than the 2.5Ghz processor that was in the base 2012 Mini?

The mini is now using the same CPU you find in the base MacBook Air -- 4260U. 2012 Mini used a 3210M. The performance is the same, perhaps slightly weaker on the new CPU actually, but it's obviously more power-efficient.

What would be the discriminator here if it was cross-platform?

I see your point. But I mean there are thousand of Third party Apps for OS X, and 1.3 Million for iOs. How many open cross -platforms does Microsoft support?

I was talking about the integration functions. I might consider a Macbook if the OSX<->iPhone notifications and other functions worked just as well if it were OSX<->Android. Or I might consider an iPhone if the transition back to Android was made easier by Apple making apps for Android (specifically iMessage), or if it used the same cables that everyone else uses. Or if they were to develop some of the "continuity" features for Windows.

Or even if they just opened the protocols to allow 3rd parties to write apps that use the features, that would ease a lot of my fear of stepping into a vendor lock-in situation. I would hate to grow to rely on a feature of my computer that would become unavailable if I chose a different phone, and vice versa.
