I took a look at the specs for the new devices at apple.com. The $499 mac mini has some weak numbers, and the iPad Mini 3 is just an iPad mini 2 with the touch id and gold option. It has the same chip and internals as the iPad Air/Mini 2. I don't think $400 is worth it. $300 for a last year's Mini is a much attractive offer if you're in the market for a small tablet

Yep. $100 premium for just touchID. I was wondering how they were going to keep their margins, that's how.
It's always had weak numbers, still an awesome little computer. 1st thing I do after I order one is immediately go to crucial.com and order as much RAM as I can.

shite man. You get great value for $499. Full blown OS X, all the iApps,iWork's total integration with your iPhone Appletv and iPads etc..
It's a killer deal to get into Macs for someone on a budget looking to switch or get a great kid's computer
You need a speedster get an iMac.

If you're upgrading, sure. But if you're just jumping in, you'll need a display, keyboard, mouse. That will run you a couple hundred more.

I ask again any idea what time Yosemite will be available today or will I have to keep checking the app store all day?
Posted on 10/16/14 at 2:12 pm to ell_13
The problem is that the new Mac Mini has the specs of a $400 laptop. But if Apple threw an SSD in there, most of its users wouldn't see a need for anything more expensive from the Apple lineup. The premium is in the perceived value of OS X and the Apple ecosystem, as always. If you love OS X, you buy it. If you could take it or leave it, it's not worth it.

Speaking of drives, Apple is still pushing Fusion which you get a TB standard in the 5k iMac.

How is that 1.4Ghz processor in the Mini? Is it better than the 2.5Ghz processor that was in the base 2012 Mini?
I'm trying to decide on $499, $699, or look for a cheaper 2012 model. Mostly will be using it for app development.

The Apple SIM may be the most interesting piece of tech in the new iPad Air.
Don't have to buy a carrier specific iPad now. I wonder if they do the same with next years iPhones off contract.

One SIM. Many options.
The new Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models. The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.

True but I think the assumption is no one in Western world doesn't already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Absolutely. The true value is in OS X Yosemite, iLife, iWorks, tight tight integration built in with all your iDevices, iPhone, iPads, TV, and more and more every year. If that has no value to you this is not really a value device.
