I've never owned an apple computer before and I don't have any apple products in my household. But review after review says that the iMac is the best desktop computer out there.

Will I have any issues integrating this into my windows/google world?

I'm planning on using the computer for some photography programs, very basic gaming (Civ/Skylines games and such), and basic word processing. I'd also like the computer to last a long time as I don't upgrade but for every 7-10 years (so top of the line now might last longer???).

I've thought about another laptop, but I use my phone for about 90% of my home web browsing needs, and I don't travel with my personal computer. I also don't like the small screens so I'm looking at getting a really large monitor with a good desktop.

Any suggestions?

i bought a MBP about a year ago and still use a windows desktop at home. use both interchangeably... no "integration" issues at all...

Probably not. Google makes macOS versions of their software, so you should be okay.

I don't think Civ's system requirements are too high. Baseline iMac comes with a 1.6Ghz and 8gb of ram.

I got my parents an iMac in 2008 when I worked for Apple in college. They use it daily for general tasks and it's still humming along.

There are probably more customizable options if you look into Windows or Linux-based machines, but if you want a "set it and forget it" solution, an iMac is good option.

How hard is it to get used to the operating system?

That's a very subjective question. Depends totally on your willingness to change.

To me, it's all similar. You click things, you type things. It's not hard to figure out what does what.

I personally would never buy an all in one desktop.

For example, if the display goes bad, instead of replacing the monitor you are replacing the whole desktop.

Valid concern.

But if you figure a good monitor is minimum $170, and more than likely around $200-250, you've covered the cost of repair of an iMac screen.

The only downside is the inconvenience of having to bring it in for repair.

Well hell.

I'm wanting to pull the trigger on something this weekend given that it's tax free here in TN.

It's a good computer, it's just going to be updated in 2-3 months.

everyone i've known with an imac has had it last over 5 years. i knew a few people with the old colorful bubble looking imacs in 2008-2009ish. i have a mac laptop from 2008 that is still functioning well, albeit slow running.

as for ease of use, mac OS is very similar to modern phone software. if you can use a smart phone, you can use a mac.

Apple does not make the internals. They just piece it all together the same way Dell, Acer, etc. all do.

With that said, why pay double for identical internals?

Also why not save even more money and build your own computer? It is super simple. Anyone can do it.

Not if you don't know what you are doing and are not technically inclined.

False.

You need to look at the people asking before you throw out a blanket. "Build it yourself"

Does it seem like the OP can build one himself? He is looking at a damn iMac.

Unless there is software proprietary to the Mac, you can definitely get more bang for the buck with a PC. We build our own computers and like installing high end parts like video cards for gaming, etc. The Mac OS is nice but it takes some getting used to if you have been using a PC most of your life. I just wouldn't be willing to pay more the same level of hardware that we install in our PC's.

Is that the one OP is looking at? Because that kind of makes a difference.

And I have my thoughts on all-in-ones, but probably not worth typing.

Based on what he said, yes. iMac, biggest screen, new.

About the same price as the base model 27" 5k iMac. But if your point is that for basically the same price you can get a full computer, and that is more "bang for the buck"... that's not quite right, IMO. I mean, it's obviously true upon purchase, but you can't reuse the iMac display the next time you upgrade your computer. That display is tied to that hardware. It has no utility. Once the hardware in that iMac is outdated, so is the display, whereas a standalone display can be used indefinitely.

So just how much bang are you getting?

IMacs are great, we love our two. They're beautiful, our new one is in the living room, and work great. Our old one is about a 2007 and is still kicking.
