Home wireless router recommendations

I had an older Linksys WRT54G that worked great with DD-WRT running on it but I want something that can do 802.11 N or AC. So I got a TP-LINK Archer C2 about a week ago it keeps dropping wifi connection and you have to restart the router for it to start working again. What home wireless routers are you using? I heard ASUS is pretty good?

Bought the AC68U Asus a few weeks ago, significant improvement over the Netgear WNDR3400V2 it replaced in both range and speed. Although throughput is weak I can actually manage a usable connection on my phone a hundred yards down the street. Good signal throughout my 3000 +/- square feet home.

been seriously considering this. the devices hammering my comcast connection are growing exponentially and sometimes i'm getting congestion on the chromecast which is upstairs a good distance away.
i have a 3000sqft house as well and was mainly looking for one with a better range.

I have my TV's (uverse) on a QoS port, which is then hooked to a switch. That way, TV has priority over things on the internet. I don't use the uverse home network router for anything but the initial connection. Everything else is run through the ASUS

They have the 87 out now but as with most right out of the box, seems some bugs that needs to be resolved. Asus is very fast with firmware updates so I expect the problems to be ironed out quickly if not already. The AC68U has several stable builds including, the current OEM version. Mine immediately updated when installed & ran fine but I later flashed the Merlin 376.45 build - still fine but with a GUI with more information. Since my performance is good using a Motorola 6141 SB modem & (ugh!) Comcast, I haven't dabbled into the QOS settings.

When Comcast doubled their download speed I replaced a Linksys WRT54G with an ASUS RT-N66U and have no complaints. The software is easy to use. The default settings are good as is although I ended up changing some. I get much better coverage in my two story house.

I have a RT-N66U and RT-AC68W. Good stuff and I'm a network guy.
I got the AC router because my ROG has an AC card. But if you're only worried about N then go the RT-N66U.

Is ac necessary? I only have 25 mbps down now /50 when Cox doubles. Only running phone wifi and xbox 360.
I just ran a test. 15 mbps down from one room away. Fwiw I'm running the crappy gateway that came with it.

Nope. You're doing little or nothing with your local network and will get zero benefit from 802.11AC. Get a good N router and be done with it for a while. Those gateways are trash.

What would be a good N router for my parents? They just have cox with 30 down.

I see N ratings. Which one? Like N300, N750
So it seems those ratings are for how much Mbps is capable. A N600 can do 300 Mbps across two bands simultaneously. I would assume this is what I would want (dual band, dual radio) ???

N600 minimum probably. Yes, it does 300 mbps across two bands simultaneously, but the reality is a bit more complicated, since actual throughput depends on the client device's capability (bands, number of antennae, distance). For example, your phone will likely only be able to do 150mbps, and only if it's on the 5ghz band. None of that really matters if you're just using a few devices for internet, though.
