I'd start from scratch. Figure out what you want out of this...a movie rig or a music system...or a movie rig and a music system. I'd take the room geometry and the traffic areas into consideration, then I'd come up with a plan. I'd run that plan by the wife then mostly do what she wanted. The Jedi mind trick works well in the last step.

Both. Normal TV is 75% of the time, music through AppleTV for my girls is 25% of the time.

However, I notice that most of the TV we watch is simply 2channel Stereo mode (normal audio TV shows like New Girl or Game of Thrones). It says it's playing in Dolby Digital through my receiver but let's be real, it's 98% dialogue.

A 2.0 system has to be setup very well to do dialog impressively, so I'd stick with a center channel for that application. Your processor will run the common signal through the center, I think...not really sure how it breaks down the signal, and you'll have better sound for TV. A 3.1 setup with the 4 ceiling speakers being a zone 2 sounds good, but even then I'd use the processor settings to eliminate the center when listening to music.

ETA: These other guys are way better at surround theory than I am. I always lean toward music.

You didn't mention the model numbers of the Def Tech speakers or sub.

What is the room like? Family room open to the kitchen? Dedicated room? The room is just as important as the equipment.

Yep, family room that's open to the kitchen. Big square room but does open directly up into the kitchen 3/4ths of the way (opening is blocked partly by columns and a hip high wall).

my pioneer elite vsx-50 has an auto-tuning feature (MCACC or something) that I may try with the microphone tonight too.

Mike in the main listening position and everything in the house that makes noise turned off including AC while calibrating.

All that being said, here's what I have so I'm looking for upgrade advice:

-Definitive Technology Front L/C/R speaker and subwoofer
-4 In-ceiling speakers (came installed with purchase of house. Believe they are Jamo 6inch)

First off, what is it about your system that you don't like? Is it not loud enough, is the highs and lows kind of bleh? Is the bass from the sub not adequate enough? Can't hear things clearly?

You might try to tweak your receiver first and learn about how to do crossovers. If your receiver has a room correction, that will work great as well.

After you have tweaked to the fullest you feel that is the best you can accomplish, then I'd consider upgrading. I can make my system sound like shite if I just switch it over to a certain mode on the receiver and make it come alive by another.

Now when I upgrade, I will probably want something brighter. I would probably want Klipsch or something similar. I also wanted something more efficient in power. The speakers I have are great but they require too much power.

Recommendations needed.

Tv above fireplace. Room has 12' ceiling. Rectangular living room. Behind seating area is an open kitchen.

I would like true surround but also was considering the Yamaha ysp-2500. I think my room is to big for it though.

Thinking of angled in ceiling rears, left, center, right fronts.

Thoughts on a receiver and speakers. I have read good things about the angled mono price ceiling speakers.

You can say about damn near every movie as well.

Game of Thrones tonight was phenomenal blasting through my home theater. Football games are to.
