So I just ordered a new laptop ( this one) and I'm wanting to upgrade to an SSD right away. I've been reading up on it as much as I can but I want to make sure I'm doing the right things.
So this is the SSD I'm looking to get

And this enclosure

And I guess I'll just use the Samsung cloning software that comes with the SSD?

If anyone has any input on if those will work and if I need anything else that would be greatly appreciated

Your SSD, enclosure, and cloning software choices are all good.

Nice laptop, too, especially when you get that SSD installed.

I bought a similar model a few months ago. It's easy to do, but a bit tedious because there are about 16(!!!) screws you need to take out to open the fricking thing.

That's rare when he likes everything someone gets.

I don't understand why you are buying an enclosure.

You'd probably be better off with a fresh o/s install on the new disk (no more bloatware). Cloning usually ends up being more hassle than it's worth and there is nothing on the new computer that you can't download from the manufacturer's website anyway.

So do you think I should be able to handle the install? I don't really have much experience with hardware

Since the OS is Win10 Home, may want to "acquire" a Win7 Pro version and upgrade to Win10 Pro.

Yeah you will be fine. It's really just as simple as unscrewing the back and the enclosure and swapping them out. I had that same SSD and it was very easy.

After you remove the 1TB hard drive, would you just toss it in the trash?

Cloning is really easy with the correct software, and very fast when the drive is new and uncluttered.

And is 500gb the way to go or would 250gb be enough? I don't really download any movies or anything

Rather than drag it around with a laptop? Yes.

Reinstalling windows is a lot easier than uninstalling all of the bloatware, reclaiming useless drive partitions, etc.

No, not really. Maybe for you.

With storage, just buy as much as you can afford. However, a big hard drive isn't that necessary when you consider you will also be able to use your 1 TB HDD to backup whatever you want. Also, with cloud storage being so cheap these days, I've been getting by easily with 250 GB for years.

What do you think he is going to gain by switching to Pro exactly?

I got the 500GB. I could probably live with 250GB and be okay and never use the rest. It wasn't much more and I like the extra wiggle room in case I have to load a work program on my computer and do a project.

Just finished the install. Was an absolute breeze. Seriously took 3 clicks to clone the hard drive with the Samsung software

Eta: And holy cow is this thing fast. So weird having a laptop boot up so quickly
