I got a pro audio combo set of speakers at best buy for like $750. included 5 speakers (including center) plus a sub. Sounds great in the media room. more volume I will ever need. running from my Denon AVR300

Link?
Also, I'm asking for some remedial type stuff here. For around the $750-$1100 range, can someone link me directly to what you are talking about?
Plus, I know nothing about room configuration of these speakers, as this is my first time actually caring about sound. Now that I have a media room, I want to get some good sound effects going for movies, games, tv, etc.

Look at this link. LINK and this one (I like this one better) Crutchfield
Bass management LINK
Here is a picture to show where the stuff goes.
Denons usually have an Audyssey setup that will make your speakers sound better. Use it when you have your speakers set up.
Subwoofers do not need to be where that diagram shows. The sound from any speaker should not be able to be "pointed out". My best way of explaining where a sub should go is to put the sub where you want to sit and run some tests. Stand in certain places of the room where you think you want it and see where it sounds the best. Place it there. You do not want boomy bass. LINK
If you can, get some sound dampeners for the walls and have rugs on the ground if no carpet. Dampeners can simply be canvas art.

HT Audio, you want the L/R speakers directly next to your screen, or if you have a very large screen(projection) underneath on the left and right side. The audio is processed in a way that your L/R speakers distribute the sound that is coming from the video on the respective side of the screen, not what is coming from the side, off-screen. if you place your speakers far out, it ruins what you are trying to accomplish.
The Center is probably your most important speaker in Home Theater and pretty self explanatory as far as location.
Your rears depend on your setup, 5, 7, or preparation for the new atmos setup. Rears are really just ambient off screen sound. if you are going 5, offset in the rear behind the viewer. if you are going 7, 2 on the sides, 2 in the rear. Atmos get the ceiling speakers, not the projecting ones.
Sub location, place the sub where you plan to sit and watch, then crawl around your floor and listen to where it sounds best. thats the ideal location
Home Audio(non AV) your L/R speakers are your main priority
