Hacked iPhone?

Afternoon gents - my brother's now ex-girlfriend had her phone allegedly hacked by some unknown. Apparently she "checks in" at various places around Houston and all of a sudden, 6 random creepers show up there.
He (the hacker) sent her an extortion message threatening to expose her photos and her lifestyle. Frankly speaking, I'm not all that upset about it b/c she is a piece of crap, but I am interested to know if anyone has heard of this kind of thing happening before.
1. She has an iPhone 6
2. She uses FB entirely too much from what I understand
3. My brother is too stupid to have done it

See that's what I thought as well. I've heard of people locking the phones' owner out of their own phone by resetting the itunes/icloud PW and email. Thanks for your response.
