Yesterday it was the top redit page with a link to an imgur photo account.

Why would they turn against Apple if they've seen Windows 8?

Because windows 8 looks and works better than OS X.
See how a half-hearted jab with no reasoning holds absolutely no weight? Because it works both ways.

But it's not a half hearted jab. My guess is most of the celebs hacked are Apple users. So what are they going to do, switch to Windows 8?

The alleged exploit used was a brute force password attack which would require knowing an AppleID. Presumably these celebs' personal email addresses are neither as obvious as jenniferlawrence@icloud.com, nor widely available. It makes me wonder if this was more of an inside job as some have speculated, or part of a much bigger data breach where celebrities were not the only ones hacked.
ETA, skimming through some of the threads on the OT, it sounds like this may not have been a breach at all, just a collection of individual celebrity hacks.

Yeah I'm waiting for all the info to come in before I speculate too much. However it happened it's a major deal.

Kind of odd also that even if the vulnerability was there, no one would have noticed brute force attempts in at the firewall level for months.

Right, even the most basic setup these days should block most brute force attacks. Maybe a professional level attack behind a group of proxies is harder to detect and stop, but still, it seems like a company that builds its own OS and Data Centers should be quite capable of thwarting brute force attacks.

the apple IDs wouldnt be that hard to find with a little effort and social engineering. mother's maiden name and birthday for instance will get you a user ID in alot of cases.
since the flaw was with find my iphone and allowed unlimited password attempts, the tool they used isnt really the key here. there are brute force tools all over. its the fact that i could throw 1000 passwords at it and the stupid celebs probably had very simple passwords

firewall level? i doesnt work like that. "find my iphone" is a web application that receives similar requests millions of times a day. would be pretty easy to brute force and go undetected. but at the same time, if they were looking for brute force attempts on accounts they would have seen this. they werent looking

I know at least one of the celebs said she uses Android, so not all were from iCloud.

i would not remotely make this a referendum on Mac vs PC vs Android. I know i took my potshots earlier in the thread..but y'all expect that from me
this is more of an issue with vulnerabilities inherent in the concept of CLOUD ANYTHING. at any time, something you remove from your local area and place into a 3rd party's trust system you are vulnerable.
period.
the problem is..NSA documents released by snowden show how they can remotely hack your personal computers even if they're not plugged into WiFi or the internet via simple radio waves.
shite is crazy.
Also, who's to say somebody didn't 'war drive' over to a celebrity's house & hack their WiFi network?
Probably a helluva lot easier and probably alot more embarrassing stuff posted internally.
The truth is if you're a public figure you have a much higher chance of perverts going after you.
Hell, Erin Andrews was hacked via reversed door viewer glass.

While this is true, the issue was not with the actual cloud storage, was the flaw with find my iPhone.

Unless they are using wep or no security at all this is virtually impossible. Wpa2 has yet to be cracked...well I'm sure the NSA has

I'm pretty sure the documents just show that they can hack these devices, not how to hack the devices. It doesn't help that the NSA finds vulnerabilities and doesn't disclose them or in some cases creates vulnerabilities so they can hack in easier.

Methods like Van Eck phreaking have been around since the 80s.
