LINK

I recently heard about these, and my wife bought my daughter one tonight. How do they hold up over time? Do they function properly? The link above makes them sound like the only choice!

I need a new laptop, and these appear to be what I need. I simply use my laptop to type Word documents and PowerPoints and to do research. I use my phone for everything else.

What say you?

ETA: I forgot there was a tech board!

Your money.

But what you want/need.

I know Rummel. I want to know what people who have used them think about them.

More functionality than a tablet but less than a laptop. Also, they cost less than both.

I've been using one for two years and have no complaints.

They suck. I am a teacher and all the kids and teachers have them. They are paper weights for the majority of teachers.

I can't think of anything my wife (teacher) couldn't do on a Chromebook that's relevant to her job.

That's nice but I hate to break it to you, you cannot do these things on a Chromebook. They can not run Microsoft Office. They only run Office Online which does not give full functionality.

GET OFF MY LAWN!

i'm an IT professional who has used Office since the 1990s and i can do most of what i want using google docs..including saving as a office doc if necessary for someone who refuses to use the online link i've shared.

for the vast majority of people, the collaborative abilities with google docs is >>>>>>>>> than mediocre office and all the headaches that come with a traditional PC.

chromebook batteries last like 8 hours for Gods sake. that alone makes it worth the $150 they cost.

they cut through the bullshite and let you get down to business.

no, you dont have a $900 graphics card and full support of the STEAM library but thats not the reason you buy a chromebook.

chromebook ftw. espeically for students.

Personally I prefer to spend a little more money and have the full functionality of Windows. I have a chrome book and didn't realize how much I needed that after awhile.

But chrome books are a good choice if you really need to concentrate on work and nothing else.

chromebooks wont replace laptops in the workplace anytime soon, no doubt.

but for personal use..what functionality of windows do you find yourself lacking?

honest question. chromebooks are a different beast for sure.

A fully functional version of Microsoft Office with all its sub-programs. Also how about a vlc player so everything doesn't have to be mp4 in order to play video?

Now, you know if OP had said this...

"I simply use my laptop to type fully functional Word documents with all it's sub-programs and fully functional PowerPoints with all it's sub-programs and to do research. I use my phone for everything else."

You might have a valid point.

I love mine. Not sure I'd recommend it for someone that is a heavy Word/Powerpoint user. You can use Google docs, but I've never worked in Google Docs long enough to know if it's a viable alternative to the full Office programs.

What bottom of the barrel public school do you teach at where the majority of the teachers are morons?

it is.

you wont find pivot tables in google sheets but you'd be quite surprised at what you can do with an online spreadsheet app.

and the person complaining about VLC.. i mean dont you have a phone? i stream movies to my chromecast from my phone, i haven't used VLC on a PC in years.

If you look hard enough you can find scripts people (companies, google, etc.) have made to get almost any Office function to work in docs. I know they have 3rd party scripts for pivot tables.
