Or will this google based keyboard still just be available in iOS?

People who use android have been able to use custom keyboards for almost a decade now. They already have a preferred keyboard.
I know getting a great keyboard is kinda still cool to ios users, but no one else is impressed at this point.
We all know Google still makes more money on ios than android. Google makes more money than any other developer on ios.

that may be true but gboard is better than anything else on the market right now.
You're wrong about not being impressed. I've been with swiftkey for forever and as soon as i saw a friend using gboard i was ready to switch. only to find out i couldn't. this was like 3 months ago. and still nothing on the android side.

the rumor is that eventually google will update the android "google keyboard" with the gboard features. Who knows? I'll admit it. I'm a little jealous.

yeah it didn't make any sense that gboard went to ios before android.

I don't really care that they got it first, I just can't find a keyboard I really, really like

Yeah i didn't care that it went to ios first. But it happened back in May.

I'm sure it is super useful if you don't have a share button. Much of what Gboard brings to ios would save only one step or be duplicative of what now on tap does.

quote:Exactly. Just type the phrase, Now on Tap and share it. GBoard doesn't really save much more time, and Android can share from anywhere.

Can you explain a little further? Seems like there are quite a few situation where you would have to leave your text app to either answer something, or link something.
How does now on tap work?

Hold your home button or O button. Check it out. It's pretty damn cool.

i dont see how its similar. if someone asks you a question in text and you want to share them something you still have to leave the text message app.

Highlight whatever you're talking about in the text. Hold google now on tap. Choose whatever you want to do with it. Hit the share button. It's just about the same. The only difference is it isn't split screen unless you want to enable dual screen. It isn't the same experience carte blance as gboard, but you don't see how the service is similar?

No i dont, and i'm not being purposely difficult. To take a real simplied example how would you perform the following scenario with touch on tap.
person 1: hey do you know where so and so restaurant is? I've never been there.
person 2: presses the google button, looks up the restaurant address, and shares it with person 1

Highlight the restaurant. Engage Now on Tap. Hit the G button underneath the restaurant's name. Highlight the address. Hit the share button and select your text conversation from the recents or your text app. Profit.

let me stop you right there. that's the whole point. you have to leave the app and go find the restaurant in a search engine to highlight it. gboard is the only keyboard app that im aware of that you do not have to do it.
that's the whole premise behind gboard being better than other keyboards.

ok, don't highlight the restaurant and pick it from the list after you engage tap. I've already told you you leave the app, unless you utilize dual screen. The share button takes you right back. That's why it doesn't really matter on android in the same way that it does on ios.
Also, to be clear, you don't have to leave the app to highlight it. You can highlight the restaurant from the text message.
Finally, tap isn't a keyboard. You can use it everywhere, not just when you have text input enabled. Again, this is about a comparable service that is baked into android, that you can use with any keyboard.
All that being said, I'm not really interested in debating with you minute differences between gboard and what now on tap does. My intention was trying to help you utilize it. If you don't want to utilize it, that's fine, but I don't really care how great gboard is because your screen doesn't change but just splits.
