Holy crap it's fricking awful. They don't allow you to edit what types of status updates are seen, you can only follow/unfollow.

I am sick and tired of seeing pictures and relationship updates of complete strangers all across the country just because my Facebook "friend" (who almost always isn't really a friend, just someone I've encountered professionally over the past 10 years) likes or comments on their post.

If anyone has any clue how to remedy this, I'm all ears (I've already looked online, it seems there used to be a convoluted workaround that no longer exists).

You simply have to be more selective, or at least hide the crap out of people. I don't have these issues at all.

Facebook is supposed to be a means of keeping in touch with FRIENDS that you do want to hear from. It wasn't meant to be a networking tool. If you are tired of hearing details about a certain person, simply delete them from your friends list. It is very simple.

Facebook changes their setup whenever they feel like it.. You can create a folder under Explore and call it whatever you want. Then assign (under the friends drop down on their page) your friends to that folder (make sure you unfollow them so it won't show up in your News Feed).
It pisses me off that Facebook can override any custom setup you have made.

I deleted my Facebook account a long time ago. Don't even miss it.

Install the Chrome extension called Social Fixer. Then configure Social Fixer to hide posts with these keywords or phrases:

commented on this

reacted to this
liked this
shared a link
See all game recommendations

maybe you should re-read my OP to see what my gripe is. My issue doesn't relate to the status updates and photos posted by the people on my friends list. My gripe is that i see all the photos and status updates that they like or comment on. For example, i have an uncle in NY, and he "liked" someone's marital status update, and this popped up on my feed, despite them being complete strangers and living 2500 miles away from me.

I've met some interesting people throughout the last 10 years and i don't mind seeing what their up to via Facebook (e.g. their travels and experiences), however, i don't need to see every time they perform an action on facebook.

I also think they put stuff in your feed more from friends you have interacted with. I mostly browse around on there, not really posting much myself. I commented on a pic a friend posted about a month ago, and the next week I saw tons of posts that were this friend liking/sharing/commenting on someone else's post/page. You can unfollow people pretty easily from the app. There's a little dropdown arrow on a post. You can hide posts like that, or unfollow the person. I unfollowed a local news station when I realized they were posting something like 15 weather updates one day. I tried the see fewer posts like this option, but that didn't get rid of them altogether.

see that's the problem, you can unfollow someone (which i do regularly), but you can't follow someone, and only see their status posts. Further, the situation you are describing is if I/you like or comment on a specific post, Facebook will send a notification every time someone else comments or likes that same post; that's easy to disable.

Here's a specific example of my complaint- i worked with and was friendly with a guy a while back, and he recently became a body builder. It's interesting to see his posts, how he does in competitions, etc (so i don't necessarily want to unfollow him). However, i don't need to know when he "likes" someone's relationship status, because i have no clue who that person is, nor do i care. But now, i have that person's post showing up on my feed.

Deleting FB 1.5 years ago is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Your hatred of people will seriously go down and you will quickly realize how useless it was to spend your time reading about what other people shouldn't be sharing.

I created a new one without any friends (without my full name even) just for interaction among my friends in our Fantasy Football group. That was my only hold-up.
