Been using a dish Tailgater VQ2500 many years now. But this is the first year it has had some issues with signal retrieval. It mostly works, but having much harder time b acquiring signal and downloading the guide.

Been tailgating at the same place so surprised at the issues. However with it still working, I am hesitant to completely blame the setup.

That being said just curious if people are using the newer vq4400 with the new receiver with much success.

Plus pro tip for new users, Dish finally added a way to refresh the signal from their website so you don't have to call in.

We are still using the older VQ2500 model with the 211 receiver. We had problem with activating it for the first game this year because the software was way out of date. I called in and they forced a software update, and things have been all good.

I usually log in to chat on their website on Saturday morning to activate it, then on Sunday to deactivate it.

I had to do some repair to it a couple of years ago. There's a metal piece that came off. I used some silicone adhesive to secure it, and it's been fine ever since.

Try updating your software version, and also look inside to make sure everything is tight.

I'm cheap. No need to pay $7 a month for a receiver that gets used 6-8 days a year. They prorate the monthly fee for the number of days it's activated.

Oh, you have Dish service separately. I just have a pay as you go account setup.

Yes, I have Dish at home.

How much is it for the pay as you go account? Would you be able to turn it on and off for the days you use it?

Pay as you go with ESPN family and Fox Sports channels is ~ $50/mo.

I have the hopper receiver and playmaker that I paid for outright.

You pay month by month. So I have it for Sept, Oct, & Nov.

Great information going to take a closer look at mine. We are using the VIP 211k. Does the software not update automatically when it connects? Or do I need to do that manually?

I'm pretty sure the software only updates when the receiver is turned off (in standby mode), and usually over-night. If you're like me, the receiver is only connected while tailgating, and never gets a chance to update with its regular cycle.

The software updates when it is on and has a signal lock. They usually send out updates around 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. With the older receivers, it's mainly just for changing the encryption key, as all of the bugs have pretty much been worked out of those over the years.

If a receiver has older encryption keys, it has to be manually updated on their end for it to work right then and there. A technician can update it from his or her phone in the work order, and customer support can do it via their computers.

The same thing happens with cable tv boxes and cable cards.

That's what I have to do too. I usually setup my whole tailgate in my yard the weekend before the first game. Every year, I have to get them to send an update so it'll work.

Outside of my honda generator, my Dish Tailgater is the single best thing I ever invested in for my tailgate.

I do the same thing. Setup in the yard and call and activate. Let it download the program guide etc.

However if you leave it off for more than a few weeks you have to send the refresh. At least you can do that online now.
