I'm looking to get a new desktop computer and would appreciate some tips from the Tech Board. The current desktop is 5 years old, a Lenovo that I got from Amazon for $400.

Any tips on the best place to get a desktop and which specs matter? This is a computer for basic stuff like email, finances, VPN, and microsoft office. Also, I use two monitors and can't remember if that is typical for a video card or if I need an upgraded card.

When perusing online, all of the specs are overwhelming. I just want to get a solid computer at a good price, have it ready to use out of the box, and have it remain useful for the next 5-6 years.

Thanks for any help!

These are pretty sweet machines: LINK Might be a little much for your listed tasks, but experience has taught me ALWAYS buy more than you "think" you need. Nice graphics card to drive the 2 monitors. SSD is a nice touch.

Why do you think you need a new computer? What are the specs on your current computer? What do you think it can't handle that you want handled better?

It could be that putting a new SSD with a fresh install of Windows will do the trick. Might also need to upgrade your RAM.

Good questions. Thanks.

Actually, I was surprised to find that my five year old computer has similar processor speed, memory, and hard drive space to the ones that I was looking at buying. My biggest concern was really that the hard drive would fail. So, as you suspected, it turns out that I could just spend less money to buy a SSD and copy over to that drive. So that's what I did.

The extra computer is for the kids to use for school and basic stuff. I ended up getting this Acer Aspire desktop from Amazon. Installed it today and it seems to be working great. $450 was a little more than I was looking to spend, but the dual monitors were only $90 apiece which is less than I was expecting.

I'm in the same boat. Hard drive failed on a old one. Been looking at this exact one for a few days now. Would be interested in hearing back from you after using it for a bit

It may seem like this, but most likely you're looking at a few generations beyond the versions you have already.
