The biggest challenge to building your own...three part series.

1. Actually remembering to put it in FIRST.
2. Not dismembering yourself with the razor sharp edges.
3. Actually getting the damn thing in there.

That H110 is huge. I had problems mounting it in my Corsair 230T case.

Sorry, I mounted the cooler/fans from the top of the case and removed the top three panels. Could not mount it in the middle part of of the ceiling of the case. had to use one side. Now Im routing cables.

To save a few dollars, I went with a single graphics card (its a hoss for sure) which I will purchase when I upgrade the monitor in May when he graduates HS.

Boots and installs so quiet and uber fast. Night and Day compared to anything I have used. Windows 8 loaded in like 15 min.
He's installing Steam and setting up his preferences currently.

I think the most impressive piece of the build is the case and the power supply. You can tell that these are both very well built and simple to setup and use with very nice features

Many many thanks! This kid is ecstatic!

Fractal Design makes some great cases. Overall, case designs have come a long way in the last 10 years or so.

I'm glad you went with the custom build. It will last him so much longer and is significantly more powerful than any prebuilt machine for that price.

No worries. I have two 980s myself, but a lot of the games I'm playing now don't really use the second card. Even when you get a 1440P monitor, your son probably won't feel all that limited by the single 980, but the option will be there whenever.

My son is having a few issues with the FPS and refresh rate. I left everything as default from the manufacturer. He set up a gaming profile with the gpu tweak software but no luck. Any suggestions on what to do? Cannot sustain a 60 fps during gaming.
TIA

I need much more detail than that. What games are not sustaining 60FPS? How far below are they dipping, and how often? Also, post a screenshot of his in-game settings, as well as the gaming profile he set up.

Will do. I'm about to get on a plane and will be out of town for the week. When I get back I'll update. I'm not sure which games I just know it's through steam. Thx

I believe he sent a friend request. Says he may show up as Darkness800 which is his steam ID.

I talked to your son on Steam today. Just wanted to give you the rundown so you know exactly what to do when you get back in town.

After having him download a few monitoring/testing tools and taking some screenshots, the problem was obvious. The second he started running prime95 (A CPU stress testing tool) using the blend test (relatively mild/moderate stress test), his core temps shot up to around 100 degrees Celsius. That's omg-holy-shite-danger-zone-mega-throttling, just shy of complete shutdown. It's the reason he was seeing severe frame drops in games, particularly ones that were so old that they didn't really use much GPU power.

So anyway, turns out the pump probably isn't plugged in (hopefully that's the problem and not that the pump is dead). I showed him the pictures below and he said he doesn't think y'all plugged that in. Assuming you did plug in the 4-pin fan connectors, you only need to connect the 3-pin pump power connector to a 4-pin fan header. I told him to keep the computer off until the pump is operational.

EDIT: removed pics and adjusted text because I got the cables backwards and don't want to confuse anyone else

Once that's sorted out, I'm pretty sure everything will be working fine. However, the problem with the CPU running at high temps is that it can lead to degradation. From what he told me, I seriously doubt he's been running it nearly long enough and hot enough for there to be any damage. Nonetheless, we will want to do a stability check on it once it's confirmed that the cooler is doing what it's supposed to do, just to be sure.

Smart kid you have there, by the way. Followed my instructions perfectly the first time, and we accomplished in an hour what would've normally taken days with a lot of other posters here.

I did the same thing with that cooler. Didn't read the old directions well enough and assumed the other connector was optional.

Good thing I ran a heat test before going nuts with the system.

Thank you very much. When I get back, we will test the pump. I believe each fan had its own 4 pin connector and the pump ( I could swear) was a 3 pin. I could be mistaken though. I remember because I made him look up the pin config on the MB so we could determine which pin was obsolete. We left the speed pin bare. I will double check, but I believe I plugged the two fans into the sys1 and 2 fan headers and used the cpu1 fan header for the pump. I never checked to see that it was running though.
Hope the processor is ok. I really do appreciate your help and I will follow up. If there is anything I can do to return the favor, just holla.
He's smart like his momma. lol

This might give you a clue about whether the pump is running or not...
Usually, when the pump starts for the first time, you will hear a little gurgling noise for a few minutes as it gets the air out of the system.

Well thank you for mentioning that, because you're right. I got it backwards. Just checked the documentation for the H110, and the fans are indeed PWM fans.

So, here's how it needs to be in the pic below.

Fans go in the CPU fan headers, and then the pump can go in another header. Note the orange arrow pointing to the PWM pins. That's the pin you need to leave bare when you plug in the pump.

If it turns out your pump was actually working, then you'll need to check your block mounting job and make sure there's sufficient contact and/or you didn't over-apply thermal paste.
