If so, what do you recommend?

Ask then what is compatible and just go with it look At Walmart and Amazon. It'll pay for itself quicker than you think

Helping someone get set back up, they'd prefer to buy

Here's a link to their recommended (and assumed supported) list: LINK
The Arris (Motorola) SB6141 is a good choice.

What is the benefit to buying? Aren't you still paying the same?

Modem rental fees vary from $2.99 - $11.99 monthly. When you own your own that fee goes away

Charter provides my modem for free. No rental fee.
Unless I'm mistaken but I pay $59.99/ month all in. No rental fee on my bill that I'm aware.
St Tammany parish.

That is correct, charter doesn't charge for the modem... I also recommend the arris modem; but I would recommend getting it from charter, I was able to talk them into giving me one 3 weeks ago.

It's not free, it's just "included" in your monthly bill. What speeds are you getting for your $60, if you don't mind sharing?

For $60 I am on the 60mbps plan. In my area that's the only tier. I extremely consistently get 65-75 down. Up is usually around 4.5. Little less consistent on the up.
Very solid uptime too.
I test multiple ways including downloading a large ISO.

I'm getting similar speeds for about $55 a month, so if you add in a small rental fee for a modem I'd say that sounds right.
Time Warner charges $10 a month for a modem. After using mine for only 1 year I've already saved money by buying one from Amazon.
