Best Unlocked Phone for the Money?

Currently have a Nexus 5, but with the lollipop update, i've been having tons of issues(pretty common from what I'm reading online).
Thinking about getting a new phone but it needs to be unlocked as I'm never going back to a contract again. Would like to keep price of phone under $400 if possible. (Nexus 5 was $350).

Moto X 2014 you can get one for about 350 brand new. Best user experience if any phone. Colose to stock Android, but with a few subtle enhancements.

For the money? Moto X gets my vote - highly under-rated phone with reasonable off contract price plus, Motorola regularly runs specials with deep discounts.

Have you tried a custom ROM on your N5. I've heard Chroma is running really well on it. Love it on my N6.

I feel like 5.1 has made my Nexus 5 amazing. 5.0 made my nexus very laggy, but 5.1 changed lots of my problems

I've got 5.1. My battery life has been drastically reduced. My browser closes inexplicably by itself all the time. Auto rotate switches to portrait mode by itself, the keyboard just disappears sometimes. Some of that I could live with if not for the suck arse battery life. I literally use my phone for about 1 hour total througout my workday(9-5). 100% at 7am when I wake up. 35% by 10am and it's shutting down on its own by 1pm. I have to keep it in airplane mode to get through the day. I didn't have this issue up until about 2 months ago.
Will look into Windows phone and Moto

Have you tried to factory reset the phone?

Not yet. Ive considered it, but wasn't sure if I'd lose my pictures and contacts. Are those saved to the google cloud automatically?

OnePlus One. Period.
There is no better value for money in the smart phone market than the OnePlus One. All those specs and 64GB for only $349 unlocked? Find me a phone that beats the OnePlus One in price and specs.

Thanks for the link. That One plus One looks amazing for the price. I'd never even heard of it. Do you have one? Just wondering how the build quality is?

The contacts save automatically, but the pictures only save if you have Google+.

I 'm not sure why you guys are down voting the Windows Phone comments. You can get a pretty good windows phone for cheap.
