He linked to a laptop that has a HDD, an external drive enclosure, and an SSD, which total under the $500 budget. He is suggesting that OP buy all three, remove the HDD from the laptop and put it in the external enclosure, install the SSD into the laptop, and follow the instructions to clone the HDD to the (currently blank) SSD.

This way you end up with a decent laptop with a fast hard drive for much less money than if you were to buy a laptop with an SSD pre-installed. And as a bonus you end up with a USB drive for backups.

Well the best thing to do with any new laptop, especially one that is under $500 is to change the hard drive to an SSD hard drive. This will improve performance tremendously.

I think that cloning program he is suggesting is how you can get all your files and Operating System on to the new SSD he recommends adding.

I plan to do that with a laptop like this.. but I won't even clone the hard drive I install, because I will just make a fresh new install of windows 10 from a dvd I have.

this is a cheap laptop i'm probably going to get. i plan to replace the hard drive and upgrade the ram to an 8gb stick and should be great to go. I love that this one is touchscreen. The reviews on this one are for the old model that had less features. This one has bluetooth, dvd drive, touchscreen, etc.. and latest intel processor. I may just get the i5 model for $500 though. I'm not sure yet.

could i use this to improve an old computer? My wife's computer is slow and freezes and takes forever to perform operations. If i were to do these steps and switch it to ssd and possibly improve the RAM, would it help out the computer, or is there no real way to tell?
TIA!

Edit: She has a Asus K501

specs:
Intel Pentium dual-core T4400 (2.20GHz)
3GB Memory 320GB HDD
Intel GMA 4500M
1366 x 768
Windows 7 Home Premium
DVD Super Multi

Yes, an SSD and probably more RAM would help.

apparently the max her computer can run is 4gb and it has 3 installed. Is there a way to change the max or will the 1 gb upgrade improve that much?

Check Task Manager to see how much RAM is being used during the slow-downs. It could just be typical slowdown from OS clutter/hard drive degradation, but often that clutter is in the form of excessive startup programs that will consume resources (RAM/CPU). A starting point would be an SSD upgrade, followed by cleanup (assess running processes and disable unnecessary startup programs, run malwarebytes, ccleaner, etc). Cloning the HDD to SSD first makes the cleanup go much faster.

Somewhere between a fifth-gen i5 U and i3 U (like an i5-5200U and i3-5005U). It has the single-threaded performance of an i3 but the multi-threaded performance of an i5. Based on TDP alone, the AMD may consume more power under the same load applied to the CPUs and iGPUs (35W TDP vs. 15W on the Intels, understanding that this is not a direct measurement of power consumption).

How much would it cost to have them switched out? I'm guessing an small computer store or repair store would be the ones to do it? I saw where an SSD hard drive makes the laptop price go up a huge amount.

It does, but if you take it to a shop to get it done you'll probably end up paying about the same amount. Just follow the instructions posted above. Honestly, it's kind of hard to screw it up.

Finished and everything went great. This is the way to go. My wife has a faster computer and i have an external hard drive now. Just fyi it took her computer about 2 minutes to boot up completely ( with limited start up programs active). Now it starts up and is ready to go in about 20-30 seconds. Google chrome used to take about 30 seconds to 1 minute to pop up and be usable. its good to go in about 10 seconds now. Completely worth the ~$100 spent to do it. Thanks ILikeLSUToo for posting the guide to do this!

It should be quicker than that unless you're just running a ridiculous number of extensions. Definitely do a cleanup.

Spend $20 more on this SSD.

Samsung's cloning software comes free and works flawlessly.
