They're tearing up my neighborhood, putting in fiber for AT&T's gigapower cable/internet. The door hanger I got said they offer 1GB up and down internet and 500+ channels in HD tv for around $130 a month. Does anyone have this service? Is it good? This seems to be around the same pricing as Google fiber, which won't hit my area for a few years. Being AT&T, I can see dropped speeds and extra fees. Am I right?

That's your router limiting you.

I don't have it in my area or I probably would get it but isn't 1gb down absolute overkill for 99.999% of America?

I mean, to stream in 4k only requires like 30-40mbps right? So even if you streamed 5 different 4k devices, you still would be wasting 90% of that download speed. Or am I completely missing something?

Nah, we have 10 gig residential here. 1 gig is peasant stuff.

They finished in my neighborhood back at Thanksgiving and still nothing. Hoping they drive down local prices, of course Google fiber roll is starting here so they will have to hurry.

I got AT&T bundle of Unlimited Home Phone, U-verse U300 TV, and 1G Internet on 1-5-2017. The download speed never exceeded 95 MBPS. I complained to AT&T and they sent a Technician to check it. Long story short, the problem was my older model HP pavilion computer. I checked the specs on it and the network card could only handle up to 150 MBPS. He said their 100 MBPS Internet would handle everything I wanted to do. So I dropped down to 100 MBPS and saved $20 per month. So now I have the bundle for $169.04 per month. Also got a $200 gift card for signing up.

I don't think it's the router...I know someone in another subdivision with the same router (rates up to 5gbps I think) that gets 900. Supposedly he is one of a few in his entire neighborhood who has Gigapower whereas nearly every person on my street does

Do you have a wireless AC device that can achieve gig speeds? And do you have your network setup to make sure the bands are setup right?

Yeah they tore up my neighborhood too...caused sinkholes and now no one can get the sink holes repaired. Make sure you get the AT&T contractor's company name...AT&T will likely give you the run around if they tear up your yard.

Depends. If you are downloading large files and streaming regularly it sure as heck helps. Downloading a multi GB file in a minute or less is absolutely fantastic. Gets the nerd-boner hard as a diamond.

And on the topic, I have it and hardwired to my desktop I get 950Mbps up and down, or slightly higher all the time.

Not only does your router matter, your client device matters as well. Your client device just may not be able to handle that much data. And even with 802.11ac, I never ever even come close to what my Cat6 connection gets. Wireless just has so many variables.

Gigapower is the name they give to all speeds above and including 100Meg.

I pay $60 for 100 meg up and down. 1 gig speeds would cost $90. I did 1 gig for 2 months and then tried 100 meg. I couldn't tell a difference for what I use it for.

The biggest benefit of the 1 gig package is unlimited data. The 100 meg comes with a 1TB data cap. I use between 400 and 600 gig a month using PSVUe for TV, Netflix and amazon prime video.

My computer is only 1 year old and is set up on 5gz so I'm fairly sure it can handle 1gb speed
