Anyone using or considering using cellular data as a primary home solution?

Verizon's unlimited plan is tailor made for this type of setup. Because of the unique restrictions placed on Verizon by the FCC, they can't limit tethering. That's one of the biggest reasons they are the only one out of the big 4 with no unlimited option available today, and they are doing every thing they can to push people off of grandfathered unlimited plans. I don't have Verizon, but it would definitely be an option if I was stil holding on to an unlimited plan through all of the price increases.

I'm not sure about At&t's grandfathered unlimited plans, but it's new unlimited plan doesn't allow any tethering so you risk termination if you bypass tether restrictions. Similar with Sprint, their unlimited plan only allows 3 GB of highspeed hotspot then charge a lot for additional highspeed after that. You could also bypass tether restrictions with them, but you run the same risks as with At&t.

T-Mobile since BingeOn has been launched provides an interesting twist. Their unlimited plan includes 14 GB of hotspot which doesn't sound like much, but it really is when you consider that the vast majority of video won't count against your cap if you can live with DVD quality video for the time being. I don't think 1 unlimited Tmobile plan can run a home with multiple people, but I have 4 10 GB lines and 1 unlimited line split among 3 people. In other words I have 54 GB of hotspot eligible data to split among 3 people not including free video which is the biggest chunk of data usage anyway. It's gotten me wondering why I still have Uverse.

Sure you can. There's third party apps that allow tethering, even on non-rooted phones. The one I use is called FoxFi.

A buddy of mine does this. He happens to work for Verizon, and has an older grandfathered unlimited plan. They use a hotspot for WiFi and he told me he goes through like 150+ GB of data a month.

We need to see the rise of the small ISP. It seems clear that the big players have bought politicians to keep fighting to maintain the status quo. They will not rest until the FCC is impotent.

Communities will have to come together to build municipal service (which the big guys also fight against with politics), or we need to see more small ISPs spring up to offer uncapped service. I've considered starting a wireless ISP myself. The equipment gets cheaper by the day.

My mom was lucky enough to hold on to an unlimited Verizon plan and is OK with keeping a phone for longer periods. My parents use tethering as their primary and only internet access. It works great. Outside of online gaming (which they don't do) it does everything you would need it to do. That includes streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

My brother owns a wireless ISP for rural areas, mostly for hunting camps and whatnot. He just pays for a gigabit fiber connection run to an access tower, no data caps.

But then he has to do shite like this:

And I'm just... nope.

No no, frick that. It can't be too hard to find a tower jockey.

Is he having much success with it? What sort of speeds do the customers see?

There are three tiers, with the lowest being 1.5mbps I think. They don't need much out in the boonies. It's apparently successful since he's able to support his wife and kid. It's still getting off the ground though. He also installs home surveillance systems, which helped fund the startup expenses.
