Why didn't Real buy Mbappe? Could they really not afford him?

This is retarded. Obviously Monaco would rather not to sell to PSG. I don't even hold this against PSG. Hell ya. Go for it, but this was dumb on Real's part. Benzema is awful.

They definitely could have afforded him especially after generating funds this summer.

Because of the emergence of Asensio and the fact that they didn't want to make an 18 year old the second highest earner on the team. You don't mess up that dressing room like that.

Looks like it's working out swimmingly for him. He should be in fine form for the world cup. I understand Real promoting from within, but this seems like a real swing and a miss.

Difficult question. I believe Zidane thought they would get him, but the Real office wanted him to stay in Monaco one more season. I know Mbappé's family thinks highly of Zizou, so it's disappointing they couldn't come to an agreement.

Mbappé really wasn't a necessity for Real, though. All of the young domestic talent is being hoarded in Madrid for pretty cheap. No reason to upset the Apple cart if what you're doing is already working. I mean, going into the season los Blancos were favorites to win the Chamipon's League. It's not like they missed out on the "missing piece" by not signing him.

Cristiano and Benzema have a really good rapport on the field, by the way. He doesn't score as many goals as people want him to, but Benz gets trashed too often and too harshly for his production level.

During the window, it looked like Mbappe would have been a luxury, now it looks like he may be a necessity. Hopefully the reports are true, and we can make a move for Timo Werner in January.

Reminds me of Kevin De Bruyne.

Bayern wanted him from Wolfsburg, but wanted to wait one more season. City came in and offered higher wages and more money up front for the transfer.

KDB and M'Bappe also had huge clauses in their Nike contracts that if they went to a high profile Nike team like PSG, City, Barca, then they'd received a hefty pay day.

Or you could do like the Warriors and destroy your oppositions' chances before anything even begins. When you can add talent like Mbappe at a young age like this, you do it every single time.

That's pretty standard now

Adidas started it with Pogba and Juve switching from Nike.

A few players Adidas clubs have bought have ditched nike boots as well.

PSG isn't quite Real's opposition, though. They might meet in UCL, but is that really reason enough to bring in Mbappé? If Mbappé were linked to Barca, it might've been different.

Hyperbole is to be expected on message boards these days, but come the frick on dude. Real have won the CL 3 out of the last 4 seasons with Benzema basically being the only striker they use.

Absolutely... Their owners want UCL titles, not the French league...

I meant that they destroyed other teams' chances by having such a massive talent disparity, not by hording/stealing talent. Obviously that happened as well, but that's not the aspect i was focusing on

While absolutely true that both clubs go for UCL above everything else, they've played against each other in UCL one time. And it was the group stage. I'm not sure €200 million just to prevent Mbappé from going to PSG would have been worth it.

Now if United or Arsenal would've put in a good offer for Bale or Benz... maybe it would've been different.

Maybe I was being to harsh on Benz. I don't necessarily deny it, but he has scored 0 goals in those UCL finals.

Yeah, there were rumors that's another reason why KDB didn't want to go to Bayern. They own like a 10 percent stake in the club and wanted him to switch over.

Benzema is the competitions 5th all time top goal scorer. He doesn't rack up the goals like Lewandowski & Suarez but he's been the perfect striker for that system since he's been there. He's scored some vital goals along the way and who can forget what he did to 3 of Atleti's defenders to set up Isco's goal?
