It is the worlds most popular sport and nothing else is even close. Many Americans are angered by this fact. They want the sports that America invented and dominates to be those sports and can't understand why the rest of the world is in awe of Messi much more so than LeBron. They are also a little threatened by it. Soccer is increasing in popularity in the USA and they are very afraid That athletes like Messi and Reynaldo and will steal the glory away from athletes like LeBron.

Stupid wankers think that if they fancy football it'll turn them into a duffer and they'll wake up having shagged a minger.

I'm not certain why soccer fans in America get so worked up over what a minority of public voices are saying. There are people in this country who bash baseball, basketball(me), football and hockey. Thicken your skin. I think whining about soccer criticism and suggesting people are threatened by it is just a means of creating a feeling of superiority in yourself.

Bringing truth to this thread.

Closed mindedness with a dash of xenophobia is all it is.

The funny thing is... over the last several years, the more I have gotten into soccer (both LFC and in general), the less I care about the other sports.. I find most games, with nothing on the line, boring to watch...

I still love LSU, The Saints and to a lesser degree, the Pelicans...

Some of it has to do with getting older and caring less about sports in general... I think..
you pull this from my head?

I've noticed over the last year the only sports I care about are track and cross country and soccer. Everything else I'm losing a ton of interest in.

Posting this as I watch Brazil vs Chile.

I enjoy the World Cup and I have no real issue with soccer as a sport (except maybe ties and how they are resolved, but I would have that issue with any sport).

What I do find odd, is the fan culture of soccer in the US. Having lived in Europe I've been to soccer games and enjoyed their particular cultures. But having been to MLS games in the US, it seems that the fans instead of giving local or unique US culture to the sport have just adopted either European or Latin cultural fan norms.

Also, the powers that be that market soccer or advertise with soccer have rationally decided to appeal to two market groups, Latins and cutting edge white youth. So when older Americans see this it is easy to tie soccer to two cultural threats.

I think it's retarded that goal differential is the first tiebreaker, then goals scored all before head to head even matters.

The emphasis is on all three games. That's why. Its who were the best two over the course of three games.

Why? If I win two games in the group 5-1 each and lose to you 1-0 on a penalty, while you win two games, each 1-0 on penalties and lose the third game 6-1, you're the better team?

If you beat a team head to head and you have the same amount of points, you should advance IMHO. Just because you score 3 goals and the team you beat scores 4 goals against another team doesn't mean shite

Again, its about performance over three games. Not just one. No one game is more important than the other two.

So, Brazil beats Australia by five goals, your country loses to Australia by five goals and you nick a shitty penalty on Brazil in a driving rainstorm and you're the better team?

Why even play a group stage then?

You'd have most teams playing 9 or 10 men behind the ball at all times doing everything possible not to concede.

Pretty much. This way encourages teams to actually play.

Listen I have a blast watching soccer. Messis goal the last week in stoppage was incredible. However I dont care if Messi is a bigger name than Lebron, but IMO thats debatable. I mean just look at the first dream team and the hype and crowds in Barcelona. International basketball interest has skyrocketed since then.

I like soccer but I'm more into our sports here in the USA.
