We hear this term thrown around so often. I was just reading a small snippet on Sky regarding the new Villa manager contacting a former Villa manager and the former told the new "....it's a big club...." OK, but what does that mean?

I've seen it commented on this very board before regarding some teams, with others refuting those claims. So, are there certain criteria you feel a team must meet to be considered a "big club?"

Villa is a big club with the potential to be massive again

Biggest club in the 2nd city.

History and fans are the main two factors.

OK, I get that historical success factors in. But what about the fans make it a big club?

It's got a big fan base because it's the biggest club in England's second city.

I mean, Villa Park is the seventh-biggest stadium in the league. Bigger than Stamford Bridge and White Hart Lane.

In the case of the Villa managers, this is just a case of certain people viewing the club as big. In the big scheme, world class, whatever you want to call it, Villa is in no way a big club. But for some, a club is a big club if it is in the top flight. For others, if a club has a long distinguished history and great supporters then that makes it a big club. For others, it might be that a club has to consistently win trophies to be called a big club. Still others might say a big club has to have world class star players.

The term is subjective. My thought is that if a club is in the top flight then it is in the big time. However, that in no way means that it is an elite club.

Interesting. By that metric, there would only be a few "big clubs" per league, no?

meh not really

City isn't a big club. Being a rich club does not make you a big club. Plenty of big clubs right now that are not buying players by the bundles completely out spending everyone.

Chelsea struck gold at the right time. No FFP and winning titles during the the world wide explosion of the EPL giving them maximum exposure booming their fan base an appeal.

Seems more in eye of beholder to me. You have a lot of the clubs with larger fanbases referred to as "big clubs." obviously they're not going to spend the kind of money the CL teams do. The Sunderland, Newcastle, villas of the world were all successful clubs at some point in their history and get 40k+ in their stadium each week so I guess compared to the Norwich, bournemouths of the world they are a "big" club. Doesn't mean they are well run or even half as successful as some "small" clubs like southampton, Swansea, etc.

If they aren't now, it's only because of their lack of success in Europe, which will change soon.

Again, in time it will.

Who, the Italian ones? How's that working out for them.

Many clubs still have members, so you combine their historical success, with attendance/ground size, as well as membership and money. I know in the 90s, the trend was to go public and sell stock shares. But almost all of them still have actual members.

Barcelona is the biggest club in the world with over 110,000 members who pay dues, and carry club ID cards.

We don't know if that will change or not. Villa is a more successful club than City.

You can't for sure say that. City is fighting an uphill battle. But they have been very good at getting sponsorship to boost the clubs income because they don't generate the organic income like others do.

I dunno Juve made it to the champions league final just this last season.

This is the equivalence of saying that Army is a more successful college football team than Florida.

Technically, yes I suppose. But it really has no bearing in the world we live in today.

Hell Arsenal went what 10 years with out a trophy and yet are still a big club.

Villa played in the FA Cup final last year

2 league crowns and one fa cup and a league cup with no success in Europe since 2008 and over a billion pounds spent just doesn't make you a big club. A Yoyo club doesn't become a big club over night.
