Yep. Landon Donovan is the reason I'm a big USMNT (and soccer) fan. Thanks, Cakes.

I wish I got into soccer earlier, but I even really appreciate these last four years as a fan.

Thanks to the greatest American soccer player of all-time. There is no else even in the same stratosphere who has been more positive for the growth and improvement of soccer in our nation.

57 goals and 58 assists in 156 caps. Landon scored five World Cup goals and won Young Player of the Tournament in 2002. This award is given to a player under 21 at the World Cup. Here are some of its most notable winners: 1958 Pele, 1966 Franz Beckenbauer, 1994 Marc Overmars, 1998 Michael Owen, 2002 Landon Donovan, 2010 Thomas Muller, and 2014 Paul Pogba.

The 2010 World Cup hooked me as Landon Donovan dominated our "EASY" group. The Slovenia goal was something I have never seen again. Of course, who could ever forget what is (one of) the greatest sporting moments of our lives against Algeria.

I would say that LD had an enormous hand in defining an entire era in U.S. soccer. So, it's the end of an era in a way. Best of luck to him

I hope Jurgen has the class to publicly call him in for the friendly in San Antonio, and give Donovan the opportunity to accept/decline.

Because I enjoy seeing people flip their shite over it. I'm a fan deep down and have been for years. In fact, I own a nice Landon Donovan Everton shirt (that I actually got after this thread). I don't hate the guy. I'm just critical of him because he IS the face of US Soccer, and I always wanted to see him go to Europe and play up to his capabilities.

Regardless, he's done a ton for the sport here, and I'm sad to see him hanging it up.

I was hoping to see him in 2016 in the Giggs/Team UK role. Oh well.

Get a grip, bro. My point was that, after being a dick all year about him, I'm genuinely bummed that he's retiring. Not everyone has to blow Landon constantly. I honestly thought he'd play for a few more years.

To an extent, yes. I did, however, go through a long period of being bitter that he didn't go for it when he had that first good spell at Everton. I felt like he'd bitched out. I was very highly complementary of him during last year's Gold Cup, though. Since then, I've come to terms with it. The World Cup stuff, though, was just pure fun.

I gotta credit McBride and Mathis for my love of the USMNT.

Just out of curiosity, what is your opinion of Dempsey and Bradley?

What are your opinions of Mathis going back to the MLS after a year and a half in Hannover?

How did he bitch out? He was limited to being a right winger at Everton, and although he played well, he was 28 at the time of the first move. That's fairly old for a player to move abroad. Donovan didn't get the chance he needed Leverkusen, moved back to the MLS, went to Bayern, didn't stand out, and stood out on a mid-level PL team who were notoriously frugal about buying players.

I never knew anything about his club career, and I never really paid attention to clubs until a few years ago, but I don't believe Mathis was ever the face of our program like Donovan was. As far as Dempsey and Bradley go, I was disappointed in both, yet happy for the MLS. However, I've always felt that Dempsey was overrated and Seattle was probably one of his best options. I would have preferred Dempsey stay in Europe until after the WC.

After the 2002 World Cup, "the future" was 1. Donovan 2A. Beasley 2B. Mathis.

It just sounds like you are holding LD to an unfair standard because he didn't follow a specific career model. Looking at what he has done for this modern era of USA soccer, how much more could he have done playing for Everton in 2009 to now?

As displayed during the World Cup, I am a massive Michael Bradley fan. I lost my shite the same way people lose their shite over LD when criticized. That said, I was really disappointed. I feel the same way about Dempsey. I don't dislike them. I'm just disappointed that we don't have them playing at the highest level.

The difference is that this is a huge time for guys like Dempsey and Bradley. The league is booming, and teams are paying massive amounts to get those players home. I understand Dempsey's predicament, but I don't feel like Bradley should have left just yet. When Landon went to Everton, I was stoked, and when he was doing well and getting club awards for his play, I was sure that he was going to go and wreck shite in Europe. Suddenly, he was back in the MLS and nothing really came of it. It infuriated me because it's clear that he had the tools to do well.

I understand that this is all probably very upsetting for you so I'm going to make this very clear. I'm admitting that Landon Donovan was a great player, and I wanted him to perform at the highest level he could. It's not like he's reading the SB crying because some douchebag is overly critical of him from time to time.
