You get attacked for something called "persistent infringement," to use a soccer term.

Tim Howard isn't trying to make another WC team
He is. He has stated that he would like to be in contention for a spot on the 2018 team.

I'm actually with Bhoy on this one. Howard is a good keeper but he's pretty overrated on this board, especially lately when he's been kind of shaky. Guzan may be the better overall option. If Jürgen wants to discard people for taking breaks and "trying to get by on reputation" he should probably have Howard on the bench.

Can someone explain to me how this sabbatical is different from Donovan's? I guess the timing in that Donovan did his during qualifiers.
Donovan left with an open timeline and fell completely off the grid during his sabbatical, even extending it so that he would miss the first round Hex games against Mexico and Costa Rica. His problem was that he didn't communicate at all about his progress and basically made us all wonder if he was going to retire from the game completely.
Howard, on the other hand, communicated his desire for the sabbatical well before he actually took it, and set a timeline for Klinsmann to count on. I absolutely expect him to have to compete with Guzan for the starting spot, but he definitely handled his sabbatical much better than Donovan did.

I don't think its stupid, but its not a big deal either. He was a great keeper for us and wants a few more chances to compete for his country. I don't see the problem or the comparison to Donovan

I think when you elect to take time off, you should do it fully knowing that your spot won't be yours when you return. And that you'll have to earn it back. As such, it may be tough for Timmy to get his spot back depending on how things play out.

Let's not leave out the aspect that Donovan isn't the most charismatic guy in the world. He's been seen as whiny, a wuss, and passive at times. He's a mercurial guy - he can score a hat trick against someone and pop up with some of the biggest goals in US history. He could also completely disappear in games...or from the US national team when we needed him. He proved to Jurgen that he couldn't rely on him, and Jurgen served that dish cold.
Basically, I think Tim Howard handled his "sabbatical" better and is generally more well liked by his teammates and fans than Landycakes was.
Also, Howard had one of the best beards on the biggest world stage. Landy probably would struggle for a trash 'stache. We all know that facial hair is the true measure of a man.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but Landon can at least grow a beard. Have to give him his due there.

Fair enough. I will concede that point - but it still doesn't compare to Timmy's. It is throat-ish, though.

Stupid on his part.
I wonder if Klinsy treats him like he treated Donovan after his hiatus...
It's Brad's team anyway.
Gonna ruin his legacy with this stupid move.
Except that Howard had a horrendous season with Everton and may have benefitted from the break.
He's already got a MNT legacy, he's trying not to flame out of the BPL at the moment.
