I may have been misinterpreting the Super League...I was envisioning the teams pulling out of their home country leagues altogether.

This basically sounds like a new Champions League that cuts out UEFA and is a smaller group of teams. Why is this as bad?

Yep.

What’s crazy is that Super League is banking on people being pumped up to watch Juventus vs Arsenal. Like, who gives a frick? The Champions League provides us with marquee matchups every year without guaranteeing spots for clubs that used to be big.

I’d much rather watch Leicester City and West Ham than Manchester United and Tottenham.

Because 15 of the teams in the league will be in it forever no matter their domestic league standing the previous year
Unlike champions league that has teams qualify based on the previous seasons performance

It’s a competition based on club brand and not merit

This is running parallel to the UCL, isn't it?

And also is saying the teams will continue current league play.

If this is purely a standalone league, then it shouldn't wreck anything related to club play, including current leagues.

That doesn't sound horrific to me.

It just sounds like someone had an idea to make money and UEFA is pissed it wasn't them.

I think you’re going to get people making business decisions when there’s a large amount of money involved irrespective of ownership. Real Madrid is “fan owned” and still has a boomer billionaire

I think Sir Alex’s head just exploded over “fixture congestion.” There’s no way that these clubs could field competitive teams for all of those leagues unless they expanded their squads further. So they’re either kicked out, mailing half of their competitions in, or gobbling up players turning every league into the SPL

While true, diffusing that power broadly across the top clubs should limit this type of myopia in theory. I just hope the blowback is severe enough that there is no further Americanization of the sport.

It's no different than playing in the champions league or Europa league. This is just a different competition taking that place for the top/biggest 20 clubs

There’s no shortage of good matchups domestically in most top leagues. And if you get really horny about a team from England playing a team for Spain then watch the Champions League. Liverpool and Arsenal are Europa League quality this year but that wouldn’t matter with this dumb league

The context of the CL makes it compelling. Neutrals don't tune in for the sheer fact teams are playing one another, and both those teams happen to have wealth. There has to be something driving that. A competition where the inclusion of a team is guaranteed isn't a very compelling spectacle.

That may be how it sounds, but is not realistic in practice. There are already arguably too many games. You cannot add another full 20 team league and maintain the current structure. Champions League is the most likely and obvious casualty. So you're replacing the best club competition with a competition that is not merit based.

The standard of play in England was terrible for a long while this past decade. Leicester took advantage of that and had one of the most compelling seasons in history. Maybe that fact drove these owners to suggest an arrangement this one-sided.

What makes the UCL special is the chance for a non power to win the competition. Teams like marseille, red star Belgrade and Porto have won the competition in the last 30 or so years. This will never happen again (against the top top teams).

The domestic competition as the money these teams will earn will make a Leicester City Cinderella story near impossible.

It absolutely would, especially in the Prem. If Spurs, Chelsea for example were 20 points behind the league leaders and were pretty much out of the title picture, what would they be playing for anymore if they're European places are already guaranteed? There would literally be no incentive to play, especially if their super league games were that same week. They'd be throwing out a Carabao Cup first round team to play an actual league game.
