I saw an idea a few days ago where the PKs would be held before the 30-minute overtime. I think I could get behind that idea.

That would merely lead to 30 minutes of horrible soccer where one team parks the bus because they know they win.

Why before?
IMO, it makes it seem a little less like the game was decided solely on penalties. At least the team who lost the PKs would have 30 minutes to do about it. I don't know if most people will agree, but I think it's better.

Not every match where a team is up 1-0 after 60 minutes leads to horrible soccer.

So each team would take 5 I'm assuming?

I am confused. Say portugal v spain ends in a tie. what happens?

I used to hate them until I read Soccernomics. There's a whole chapter in there on PKs that swayed me.

Can you summarize?

I guess the PKs would be just like now, just done before overtime and the winner of the PKs would win if the OT period ends in a tie.

He's saying after 90 mins they have the PKs. after that they go to ET, and the PK loser knows it has to win ET to go thru.

Portugal and Spain would have had PKs before this OT period began. If Spain won the PKs, then Portugal would need to win the 30-minute OT period. If Spain won or drew, then Spain would win the match.

Yeah, you can call it 0.5-0 Spain.

It's an alternative. Not perfect but neither are PKs.

Honestly, PKs are about as perfect as can be. I understand the complaints, but aside from continuing play until someone scores, I don't see many good alternatives.

If PKs are 50/50 in theory, I think that is completely fair.

I actually liked the silver goal better than golden goal. If you score in the 96th minute, the other team has nine more minutes to equalize. Then just don't play the second half of extra time.

Both golden goal or silver goal are fine with me.

I don't mind the concept of the penalty shootout. I do, however, think it's an abysmal way to decide a match.

To be fair, I am yet to come up with a better idea myself outside of the good, old-fashioned replay.

Pretty much this

I personally don't like golden goal. I think PKs are the best way of doing it

I stand by my guns. The replay is the only way to truly decide. But good luck getting teams to agree to that.
