I know another World Cup in 4 years, but aren't there other competitions between?

Gold Cup next year, Olympics and Copa America in 2016, Confederations Cup in 2017.
There will be a bunch of friendlies sprinkled in between all of that plus 2018 World Cup qualifying starting up in May 2016.

No. We just automatically qualify for 2018 and there's nothing in between.

You have to win your confederations tournament. Which means we have to win the 2015 Gold Cup.

Another question, how do they mix the national team events with club play? Won't club play interfere with the coherency of the national squad? Are the tournaments staggered to not interfere?

There are "international breaks" for friendlies, WC qualifying, etc.

They all take place roughly around the same time as the World Cup. So, really, it's just MLS that is still in season.
