It takes a while to really get a feel for competitions and such. I already knew the rules and had some understanding of the game itself, but certain customs and understanding leagues took a while.

Was fun though, I can honestly remember a few years ago thinking "holy shite, I'm never going to get my head around this" and to some extent, I still do. Coming from American leagues where you can pretty naturally pick up on major players, teams, the status of various competitions, etc., it's different. For me at least. Takes more energy to stay current, but it's been fun.

If you don't care where the team is located, become a Schalke fan.

they have a really young club, with some really good players who are developing.

As long as they don't get poached, they should be a top3 in Germany for several years.

If you hang around this board enough, Mr. Personality will pester you to death about Russia, which is his shtick on here. But the Russian league, along with the smaller European ones and some South American ones, are mostly available through online streaming.

You're jealous of my Russia knowledge. Just admit it.

i am, but from playing a lot of Fm15 and Fm16, you cannot help but notice the kids their academy is putting out and developing.

And when you first start out, might as well follow a team who is young and will grow and develop

No shite. To the OP, just know that Mesut Ozil is Muslim Jesus and you should bow to his greatness. And yes, this is one of the only names/acronyms that actually started on TD. You are fricking welcome. I beat Redditt.

Hello and welcome, do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior Harry Kane?

best way to get into watching

One does not watch soccer. One puts it on in their living room and goes about their morning house cleaning routine, taking breaks to look over when the crowd cheers/jeers. You can drink too.

quote:

learning all the rules

Players can't use hands/arms, except the goalie (unless the ball is passed backward from his own team).
If the ball goes out of play on the long ends, throw in for the other team. Ball out on short end, either a Goal Kick (if off of attacking side) or Corner Kick (if off of defending side).
Fouls called on dangerous play or non-play extracurricular. The worse the play, the more likely a yellow card.
Two yellow cards, or an egregious foul, or a foul from behind during a 1 on 1 situation with the goal scorer, will result in a red card and ejection.
A foul inside the large box results in a penalty shot
Other than that, learn the Offsides rule. It's 90% of the reason why soccer parents fight with referees in the US.

There are basically two rules, offsides and don't clip (kick) a player while trying to win the ball. Also the ball is considered out of play once it crosses the line; a player on the ball can be over the line and still be considered in play as long as the ball doesn't cross over.

It's a lot like hockey in a sense that it is free flowing, fluid, not very many times they stop play for reviews or commercials like in other sports.

Yeah there are not loads of scoring but if you take it for what its worth, 90 minutes of nonstop play, maybe a goal here or there, or a few moments of great play or individual skill regardless if they score from it, you can enjoy it. Remember it is the ultimate team sport, you can have the greatest player in the world on an average team, but go up against a great team with avergage players, the GOAT player will lose (see Portugal v USA in last WC). That is what makes soccer the best game to watch in the world. Don't expect tons of goals but enjoy the indivuadual battles and display of skill that is involved.
