MLS growth process

why hasn't an any MLS owner thrown ridiculous money at a young star from Europe to come play for them? I know it would cost a shitload of money but the investment would be worth it and that player would become the instant face of American soccer and get mass endorsements while in Europe he would lag behind messi and Ronaldo. Maybe throw a ridiculous offer out for bale or lewandowski, make them say no

Because they don't want to throw away Champions League games?

Could MLS money legitimately beat out the ridiculous money these guys already make? People overlook the fact that soccer is Europe is all about ridiculous money.

They would definitely be taking the easy way out. Also the potential to not get called up to the national team.

They will say no and not think twice about it.

money being equal most Europeans would rather play in the US than in China, so I don't buy this "they would say no"
maybe not the level of a Bale or Lewandowski but you could do it
the thing is, MLS doesn't really want it. there are no MLS owners, they are investor/operators, and they are much more interested in protecting their monopoly than they are actually growing the game.

Those guys are kings in europe, not so much here. I would stay unless the money was messi or ronaldo level

You could make the same argument by saying why dont pro basketball teams in Europe go after all Americans with long term contracts

It would essentially kill those guys careers if they came to the MLS
It would get old seeing them run circles around MLS defenses

LA gave Beckham big money
Wasn't it 25mil per season? They could go to 30 per

I think it was around 8 million but they gave him that sweet ownership deal

They could go out and spend like China, and throw their money away sure. Americans arent turning up to see Ramirez no matter how much you paid for him, and it wouldn't "grow the game" either.
If you wanted to argue MLS owners didn't care about "growing the game" you'd be wise to bring up that they would be better off spending the ridiculous money it would take to bring these players here on youth development and the like but that they aren't doing that either. Of course, the reason for that is MLS is a real business, not some sheikh's play thing or object of Chinese conspicuous consumption/asset dump.

Honestly, I think the current model is going to be best for MLS. The age of the "stars" coming over is slowly getting lower, and you see multiple big names coming over and complimenting the league every year.
What this says to me is that people are enjoying their time here and telling others to join the fun. Guys like Giovinco coming in and balling out will happen more and more. I just hope the league doesn't try to expand too quickly and allow their current franchises to build talent. I'd love to get to a real 2nd tier league sooner than later. I'm not sure when we can be a true first option, but the rate at which the quality of the league is improving is wonderful.
I was a Dynamo supporter for years, but I haven't got to really follow the league as much as I'd like. Until NOLA rocks a franchise, I don't know how much of a supporter I can be. I'm going to be spending time near Boston and in Seattle in the coming months so I'm hoping to take in some matches and really find a club that I can support organically (that likely isn't Seattle, LA, etc).

MLS is a business and right now mls does not have the revenue numbers from TV. The growth of mls is a careful and measured one that steadily progresses. A big name is bought here and there, a Giovinco or a Beckham, but the emphasis and investment has been focused on infrastructure (stadia and training grounds) and academies since an essential reboot ten years ago. Community involvement and academy development are being used to grow the league from the ground up as part of a long term strategy.

Meh not really
Gerrard, Lampard, Villa, Kaka, Pirlo where the biggest names last season and all pretty old.
The biggest name this year was old arse Ashely Cole.

More of this guy it what is needed.

Dos Santos is a good player to bring in too.
Posted on 4/7/16 at 4:47 pm to StraightCashHomey21
Giovinco and Dos Santos come to mind before some of those guys.
Cole may be the biggest name, but he isn't even a DP. Ironically, every single new DP signed this year is under 30.
