That second half was torture. Complete reversal of the first half where we were in control.

They moved their line a bit higher, but I didn't see anything else that really caused the difference. Anyone see anything else? It concerns me that a team that looked so tired in the first half could take complete control from us for the entire 2nd 45. Coutinho was pushed around more than I've seen happen before.

Mignolet is just a great shot stopper. Many keepers would have gotten a hand on that last Bentenke shot, but most of those balls would have still powered through into the goal.

Toure is a beast - not as fast as he once was - but his physical prescense and positional awareness are great.

Today was an excellent example that we really stink on the counter. Suarez would have made a huge difference.

Doesn't matter, have 6 points.

Thought Cissokho played very well in that wing-back spot. Jesus was he fast.

Yeah that was the worst I've ever seen him get as far as physicality goes. He was being abused but to his credit he played through it.

That last shot was going so fast. I just have no idea how he reacted that quickly.

He's turning into a fantastic signing. Even when he got outpaced by Benteke he found a way to slow their counter down and forced them to drop a pass back. He wins every header that comes his way, which is something we sorely need. Just so happy with how he's panning out.

Toure has really bought us at least a season to find our RCB for the future... Hopefully, we can bring in Llori to provide cover for Agger... Coates going down makes that a must.. If we can get one in, I think Wisdom may go out on loan..

I'll say it again, IMO a CDM is a must... I like Lucas, but we need an upgrade there..

Cautiously optimistic at this point, we'll know where we are when we play the scum next week

I think the poor second half performance had a lot to do with their MFs pressing a lot more and Lucas having a poor half. The link between defense and attack was gone, we had less time on the ball, Coutinho was exposed and our general quality fell. But that's going to happen. Teams will adapt to our play and that will affect us. What is good is how the team khuckled down and weathered the storm even when we weren't in control.

To preface, I am a new fan of Liverpool and have a limited understanding of strategy so please be gentle.

Several people here have mentioned the need for a defensive mf. After today's 2nd half I don't understand why. To my eyes it seemed like we hunkered down content to clear the ball. There was very little forward pressure by the good guys. How is a defensive mf gonna help us when we just want to clear the ball out after we have the lead?

To me, a mf that can control the ball and distribute would be of greater benefit when we are trying to "hang on"?

Sorry if this is stupid... Just trying to understand.

IMO Lucas is an average, at best, CDM...

He is often caught out of position and chases the play... I realize that he was originally brought in as an attacking mid by Rafa and has come a long way since then. He doesn't seem to have the natural instincts to be in the right place like the top CDMs... And he is developing a bad habit of committing silly fouls and giving up free kicks in dangerous areas... very frustrating!

The second half of yesterday was a weird example, because I haven't seen us pinned back like that, in a long time... Gerrard actually was very good defensively yesterday, which isnt what he is asked to do normally..

BR's system plays with a high defensive line and split CBs, so IMO we need a better CDM who can cover for these guys and anticipate play better... Also, someone more physical that wont get pushed around..

I think others on this board have a different opnion..

So lets talk about what happened in the 2nd half. That was the most under the gun this team has appeared to be under Roger's regime. What happened? I have my own thoughts but I'd like to hear what the more tactically astute Reds have to say about it.

It seems like BR was happy to just defend a one goal lead, which, if memory serves, isnt very typical of him... One goal isnt a lot with Benteke and we dont really offer much on the counter...

That said, Toure handled Benteke for the most part and Mingolet was solid again (basically, earned us 4 points on his own, this season)... Cissoko and Allen were defensive subs and at that point, we were hanging on...

What can I say, 6 points out of 6... Hopefully we can get a few more layers in and be in good shape for when Luis returns...

Tottenham are far from impressive and neither is Arsenal... No reason to think, with a couple more quality players in, we cant compete for 4th...

It looked to me like they played a higher line (we have no real speed to take advantage of that) and condensed us into mostly our own half, which did not provide as much space for us to pass it around.

I'm not certain that they pressed per se, but they definitely upped the pressure. It essentially looked like the reverse of the first half. We had trouble putting things together in possession.

I don't know if they mixed up their formation at all in a way that we didn't expect?

We had issues right from the start controlling possession in the 2nd half. I think that's the biggest reason why we had to retreat into our own half.

So who comes off once Suarez is back?

Is the 1 goal/match from him and 1 goal per 1.5 from Sturridge plus the odd score from whomever, does that put us in the top 4?

FYI, I am hooked! Already loving LFC!

Yeah it seemed to me they played much higher. Glad we proved we could sustain the pressure so if it happens again we should have confidence to close the game.

Cou comes to the center in the hole. Suarez on the left, Sturridge in the middle, and Aspas on the right (or some variation of those three up front).

I think if we make one or two more key signings we can compete for top 4. A good bit of that question will be answered this weekend. If we can take a point from the United match I think we're the real deal as far as that goes.
