I admit that I only watch soccer for the World Cup, but I do enjoy it when the WC comes around.

Why is it that our team continues to show the same inability to control the ball? I watch other teams that make passing look easy and they control the ball so much better. It's frustrating seeing teams maintain the ball on attacking side of the field and setting up shot attempts while we seem to infrequently do this.

I saw the same inefficiencies last WC. Is it mostly due to talent, coaching/strategies, or something else? I do understand that maybe we had a bit different plan after getting the early goal, but it's almost like we always seem to be trying to kill a power play to use a hockey reference.

Again I've never played, so my general knowledge of the game and strategies is basic. I'm just looking for some insight from you guys that understand better, or see it differently and can explain why.

Thanks

Bradley played a terrible match, our whole midfield for that matter.

If the Ghana match was all that you've seen lately then you've missed many WC Qualifiers and some friendlies where we played some beautiful, attacking soccer.

You can't watch only 1 match and say that we continue to show the inability to control the ball.

USA has been very good in qualifying at keeping possession. Even so, there are more ways to win a match than just keeping possession.

I will admit that the Ghana game may have been the worst I've seen USA look at possessing the ball in the last year, but I think it was in part due to the altidore injury, the early goal, and Bradley's poor performance.

Our teams normally had great control on the ball. That Ghana game was a fluke (as far as for possession). Don't be discouraged, you'll see improvement in the next match.

I doubt many people who only watched the Auburn-LSU game last year would have imagined Auburn in the title game. Your sample size is too small, bro.

We do not need to maintain control the whole game, but we need to not turn it over so freely. I think a big improvement will be made if Bradley returns to normal.

We lost our best possession forward (Jozy) 20 minutes in. After that, we couldn't keep the ball long enough up front to push up from the midfield.

Also, our midfield and backline isn't very technical (by comparison to the best in the world). They've probably had literally 10,000 fewer touches (if not more) in their lifetimes than their opponents, because of the nature of American soccer development.

You can, but it's a dumb thing to say.

I hear what you guys are saying. I figured that we had to have improved in that aspect since last world cup, but it appeared to be the same old USA. I wasn't sure if it was due to Ghana being good, us not being talented or what.

I can understand a bad game and also the small sample size. It was just really obvious that we should have been able to apply more pressure than we did but with Altidore going down I knew that would affect us. Thanks for the replies. I'll be hoping we can control better next match.

I don't know the possession time off the top of my head, but I felt Nigeria controlled possession a lot during that match, which I felt at the time to be a cause for concern. And that happened to be the same lineup, Minus Altidore for 70 minutes, that played against Ghana, another African squad.

Maybe now some on this board will start to appreciate Altidore.

and Jermaine Jones for that matter.

Anyone who doesn't recognize the fact Jermaine Jones was a hero for us Monday night doesn't know soccer.

The JJ hate is universal among US fans. I understand it but I've never agreed. He's a MASSIVE upgrade over hat we've had at CM in the past. That was our worst spot in 2010.

Why didn't Stu play there in 2010 again? Guess he was more of a wide right then, pre Bolton.

Portugal don't press worth a shite, usually. Should be okay.
