Five Arab nations have severed diplomatic ties with 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar over accusations of embracing and funding Islamist terrorism.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen have cut diplomatic ties with the Gulf state over its "embrace of various terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at destabilising the region".

The nations have announced the immediate withdrawal of all their diplomatic staff from the capital Doha and said they will eject Qatari diplomats from their countries before closing off their borders to Qatar.

The Qatari foreign affairs ministry insists there is "no legitimate justification" for the countries' decision, calling it a "violation of its sovereignty" - but the move is likely to cause further problems and embarrassment for FIFA.

In a statement, FIFA said: "We are in regular contact with and have spoken to the Qatar 2022 Local Organizing Committee and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy handling matters relating to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

"We have no further comments for the time being."

Saudi Arabia's football team today refused to line up for a minute's silence for the victim of the London Bridge attacks. Crowd booed them.

Who were they playing and was it home or away game?

Perspective wise, the guys that grow up in that part of the world and now play for SA almost certainly have witnessed or have been directly affected by terrorist acts of violence much worse than this. Could have been some kind of protest of a perceived sympathy bias when something like this happens outside the Middle East.

Regardless of their reasoning, it just shows the backwards arse way some of those people view the world and their place in it. You always hear about what a tiny percentage it is of the Muslim world that condones these things. In my mind, one would have to think if the Saudi national squad feels strongly enough about this to protest, it must be much more common among the general population than we are led to believe. What kind of fricked up line of thinking do you have to operate under to think it's cool to protest the most basic of symbolic gestures like this one.

This is odd. Qatar (specifically Doha), is cool as shite. Everyone there was incredibly nice. And western culture was everywhere.

Still a shite place to hold a World Cup though.
