I don't think there's any doubt that the guys who took big pay checks to come back to MLS have regressed.

None of them has even maintained their ability, let alone improved.

Its a valid criticism of the player pool - however, most of them except for Bradley and possibly Altidore were likely to start declining at the time of their return anyway.

Doesn't explain some of the stupid call-ups, lack of call-ups for players doing well, and line-ups that make no sense.

If anything, you have to get those things right to maximize the (possible) lesser talent in the pool.
