I actually like soccer because of FIFA and the US team actually being fun to watch. I am a casual (at best) fan.

Was just making a stupid joke. Apparently it's a touchy subject. Sorry folks.

Not reading all of this shite that usually goes into a "soccer is popular in the U.S."

-but no Messi isn't a more popular athlete than Wade

and ......

until the best players in the world are American and playing for the MLS, soccer will not overtake the Big 3 sports. Live events are still the most influential on fans.

Is it just me or does it seem like some people are dreading the day that soccer overtakes baseball and the nba as if it is gonna cause them physical harm. Why would the best americans have to stay in the mls for this to happen i have no clue. Sports television coverage is evolving and for many it is already preferable to being at the game, get with the times

This will never happen.

The MLS needs to exist so that American players have a chance to play at a high level, but doesn't need to be the most popular sport in America to succeed. It won't overtake any of the big three. But I think there is plenty of room in America to have another big sport. MLS attendance is good and growing and the amount of teams from Europe that come over here to tour and the crowds they draw is a good indication that the general public wants to watch quality soccer.

If it remains a niche sport then it will still be a massive success. If you told me that we would have crowds of 40,000 to watch two American teams play in 1996 I wouldn't have believed you. The growth of the sport I. That time has been amazing, but I'd rather the sport grow at a steady slow pace rather than overextend itself like the NASL.

I was starting to get into Soccer but then I discovered Rugby which I now like better than Soccer.

I wish Rugby would catch on here instead.

Rugby is a great game, but I think the real lack of an international market makes it a difficult sport to export. I think the support of the vast international market made it possible for soccer to grow at a steady rate here. Rugby's range is limited to much fewer countries.

Pretty much dominated by the 6 Nations and Tri Nations teams. I think American football players could adopt to rugby if we had a league here they could develop in.

You can thank a lot of this to FIFA video games.

Best game series of all time. I used to wreck people with Ajax on FIFA 96 on SNES

What are you talking about? Rugby has an international market. The Six Nations is big in Europe, Twickenham & the Stade de France are always sellouts of 80,000+ for international matches.

The Lions tour in Australia last month was massively successful. The Rugby Championship is getting ready to kick off in the southern hemisphere. Rugby is more popular in the Tri Nations than soccer is.

Yeah no doubt soccer is a bigger game globally but rugby has an international market.

i think he is saying its only big in about 10 countries tops, the six nations then in the pacific and south africa

and even in europe it still plays 2nd fiddle and the attendance for internationals is good but for club matches in union and league its not that great in europe

Well I wouldn't argue with you there. Though some club matches have good attendance, it just depends on which teams are playing.

I'm not arguing that soccer isn't bigger cause it is. I'm just saying that rugby does have an international game. It's growing in popularity in other countries as well. Japan has good crowds for their matches last month against Wales.

Super Rugby Championship Match is this weekend, I can't wait for that.

I'm real excited about the upcoming French Top 14 season too. Lotta good southern hemisphere players heading north this season.

I even gave watching Aussie Rules Football a second try and I'd have to say is pretty damn entertaining.

Anyway sorry for the thread hijack. I'm just trying to do my part to promote the great game of rugby to my fellow Americans.
