How much do you think a change in strategy would have led to us retaining and possessing the ball?
Granted, at that point, Belgium had changed to a more defensive strategy, which helped us keep the ball more. But still.

Yes - when you don't even have the ball you can't attack. Sounds easy, totally dominated but let's just throw numbers forward and create chances - easy peasy.
Wynalda is a mouth breather.

Judging by our strategy yesterday, it looked like Klinsmann believed we were the second best team (and therefore would have to defend for 120 minutes). I think that attitude can give not only a bigger portion of possession and chances to the other team, but also confidence.
Belgium is better than us. We came in with a strategy that gave the US the best chance to win, which was clog the middle of the field and when possible push the ball up the outside. Play solid defense and counter. Sure ideally we could hold the ball up and kick it around for some possession, which we did at times. But with no hold up striker, there are few options when a team has more individual talent on the field.

I think we showed in the final 15 that we had ample ability to get forward and create chances. I just wish we would've done that from the first minute instead of the 106th
It was clearly evident that Belgium hunkered down to sit back and play defense. In the few times that they pushed out of their bunker in the last 15, they almost scored and left out team truly gassed. Had we pushed the ball all night they would have killed us.

The fact that it wasn't successful?. . .
I understand having a disagreement on tacticts, but EW is acting as if we didn't give ourselves a chance. The results speak for themselves, the inferior team plays for a close game. Once again, it nearly worked.
If we would have thrown players forward all night, Howard doens't have 16 saves. Belgium has 3+ goals. Howard has those saves because Belgiums opportunities/efforts were largely subpar due to our defense posture.

I actually like Lalas. I'm probably the only person who does. He says some dumb shite, yeah, who doesn't.
I cant suffer through Wynalda. Twellman is approaching that level as well.

We tried to get forward the entire game. We started without our dedicated defensive midfielder. Omar Gonzales was around their 18 on multiple occasions. We lost our elite (for us) RB and brought on DeAndre Yedlin and told him to push the attack AND defend one of the most dangerous players in the tournament.
We absolutely did not play like we believed we were the second best team, and that's why Belgium had 1,000 shots on goal. They are legitimately better, and we gave them loads of space because we played them straight up.
The difference in the game was their quality on the ball. They have it, we don't. So their touches turned into chances while ours turned into nothing for most of the game.

I think this has got to stop...
We need to recognize that Fabian can play with anyone. I would take him over Rafeal at this point for United. This guy flat out looked fantastic against Germany and Portugal.
Granted i know I am biased on this point but i think he could play for a lot of clubs

For me the most noticeable difference in quality between the US and Belgium was in fighting for 50/50 balls and off the ball movement.
On 50/50s their players knew where their outlets were and were much better in controlling lose/errant balls and their passing was more crisp. Even when it looked like we had won a 50/50 ball we often ended up losing it immediately after, whereas this wasn't so much the case for Belgium.
The off the ball movement was rather evident and doesn't merit explanation.
ETA: Wynalda is a massive douche. It's no wonder that he and Bradley had a bust up at the last World Cup or whenever it was that that happened.

True. i dont think we won a 50/50 ball until about the 80th minute. obviously this is an exaggeration but we did start doing better at this around the 74th

Belgium is a team that scored/won late in just about every game they played.
in group play, all four of their goals came in the last 20 minutes of each game. obviously, their two yesterday were even later.

3 of the 4 teams dominated us, including ghana..
consider us lucky we made it to knock out stage

We made it out of a group with Germany, Portugal, and Ghana. No one expected us to make it out of that group, but we did. Luck didn't have so much to do with it as did playing 270 minutes of soccer that got us the results we needed to advance.

We deserved 4 points in the group stage.
Belgium did dominate the run of play but our backline and GK kept us level. With Jozy and Fab out we were fortunate to go to ET considering the talent level of Belgium.
Still a solid effort for us considering the circumstances - no need to spew the overly negative view.

Wynalda still hasn't gotten over shite from 1994 and he's just a guy who says controversial things in order to draw attention.
