I've been following the sport for 30 years. I only just chose Fulham five or six years ago, after watching the EPL for nearly 20. It's not just Clint Dempsey, though. Fulham was the first club to take a chance on American playerS ten years ago.
They signed Brian McBride, who is now a club legend. Then they followed up by signing Carlos Bocanegra who gave them, what? four years of solid service. Both were in the side regularly.
THEN they signed Eddie Johnson who flamed out, but they kept trying with him.
After him, they signed Clint Dempsey who is now a fixture in the side to this day.
Kasey Keller played there half a season as well. And there were a couple of Saturdays where the gaffer actually had all five Americans on the pitch at one time.
Now they've all gone their separate ways, with the exception of Dempsey who is solidly in Martin Jol's plans for this term, but many believe his days are numbered as clubs in Germany and Italy are reported to be quite interested.
McBride returned to MLS and now retirement.
Bocanegra moved to France when FFC didn't renew.
EJ was loaned out or stuck in the reserves almost every year, despite his blinding speed. His total lack of footballing skill and weakness of mind never so evident as his last senior team appearance at West Ham two seasons ago, when he stopped on a breakaway in the penalty area, at 15 yards out, and let the Irons keeper come out and take the ball off of him while he had his thumb up his arse.

Oh wow. I'll have to find it.
Some of the Cottagers I talk to on FB are concerned a bit that Jol is signing players for the youth set-up instead of the first team.
I tried to tell them he'd played serious first team football for the Rosa. But they're not having it. We'll see what today holds. I hope he does well.

Like most people have said, watching the games are a great way to pick a team. Narrow it down to a few and then watch as much of them as you can. You will fall in love with a club.
Other things to consider:
1. Rivalries. This is a big one for me. Everyone wants to follow a club with rivals they can hate.
2. Table location. This is pretty self explanatory. If you want to follow a winning side, don't pick a team in the bottom half of the table. If you want to follow a club that will hoist trophies, pick a club in the top 6.
3. Tradition. Another big one. Wikipedia is your friend.
4. Financial standing. This is becoming extremely important in the modern game. You simply cannot win without money.
5. Find your niche. Do you want to see goals, do you want to win trophies, do you want to pull for the underdog, do you want to follow youth, do you want to pull for Americans, do you want to follow a team that is active in the transfer market, etc etc.

I spent many a boring day at my GA job on campus reading up on the EPL and every team. I have forgotten most of it, but it gave me a good background on most teams.

OK. I don't get that, Hughes had them playing a more up-tempo style than Uncle Woy, and by all indications Martin Jol will as well. I mean he was at Spurs and Ajax, he's an up-tempo/total football guy.
If you follow the passing boards on Sunday or Monday mornings, you see a lot from FFC.

they're always mid-table... i like the top couple teams because of champions league implications and the relegation battle.

FFC have only achieved that consistency in the last four years or so. Prior to that, sadly, it was much worse, with the darkest days in the early 2000s when the shared Loftus Road for a few years, before Mr. al Fayed bought the club.

Personally, I would avoid following a club just because they have Americans. Fulham are the exception because for a decade or maybe more they've been throwing contracts to Yanks and giving them meaningful opportunities to show what this country can do. If following Americans is your bag I would say Fulham is the only way to do it.

I was picking a team like you, and I decided to go with Wolverhampton. This past season my friend and I would jokingly sometimes play as the Wolves in FIFA. However, I started to like them and root for them a little. Now, I decided to follow the Wolves, and I am really looking forward to it. They are actually one of the most successful clubs in English history. They rank fourth in the league's all-time table, and they are only behind Man U, Liverpool, and Arsenal. They also rank eighth in cumulative trophies with thirteen. At this point, they may not have the capabilities to win the EPL or get televised as much, but they are a club with some unknown history.
Two cool Wolverhampton highlights:
Their dominance in the 1950's during the Stan Cullis helped lead to the modern-day Champions League.
The Wolves were champs of the United Soccer Association in the 1960's (yes, of the USA
) under the name, the Los Angeles Wolves.

The club has a nice feel to me, though, as well, judging from the sites I read. There's also that whole underdog/Cubs feel to it as they've rarely been THIS consistent. I think they're in the Premiership to stay, now, but many over there would disagree, and still see survival as the first goal of the club.
Add to it the great old ground....now a historical landmark....and its location right on the River Thames.
My thing about following Americans, Bleed, is that I clearly remember when it was just Keller at Millwall, Meola somewhere, and Harkes at Sheffield Wednesday in 1990-1991. And that followed by a completely mulleted Joe-Max Moore for the briefest of spells at Everton.
For you guys, it's more the norm to have a few scattered Yanks, for me, Fulham really stepped up, so to say.
Add to it the great old ground....now a historical landmark....and its location right on the River Thames.

My post was definfitely in support of Fulham if he wants to follow Americans.
I would agree. I cant imagine them going down anymore. They'll be fine.
I can completely understand. One of the reason I love Liverpool is Anfield's history and how the club refuses to change any part of the stadium to become more modern. I went on the tour about a month ago and it was like stepping back in time walking into the boot room and the dressing room. Old wooden benches that had been there for 50 years, the same walls with simple paint and just hooks for the jerseys. They have pictures hung up of Shanks and his team from 1959 in the boot room and it is identicle to the same boot room its sitting in now in 2011. Such a cool thing to really be able to step back in time to the laste 1800's and see how modern soccer hasn't corrupted that tradition and history.

I totally agree, thats what I was saying. Usually players get traded regardless of nationality but Fulham have shown their support for America's untapped talent pool is here to stay. If you're going to watch the game to follow Americans I think Fulham is your only choice because they're the only team that has proven they have in the past and will in the future give us a chance no matter what.

Did you ever have a high school drop-out cousin that dabbled in meth, and you were nervous at every family get together that he would get too drunk and try to grab your girlfriend's arse?
Then he got popped for his 4th dwi and got sent to county for a year. Only then you realized you actually missed him. Now he's out and life feels a little more back to normal.
