EPL Team Help

Can someone give me a breakdown of the EPL team's fans, culture, history, etc....I'm looking for a team to root for and I would like to know more about each club. I really don't know where to start to be honest with you. For example, I have heard that Manchester United is essentially the exact same as the New York Yankees. Is one team (aside from West Ham) notorious for having fans like the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, etc? Is one team more of a wine and cheese crowd? Is one club just notorious for not getting over the hump or making it to the big one? Is one team notorious chokers (like Ole Miss, Buffalo Bills)?
I think you are kinda getting the drift. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be an English Premier League team. Teams like Millwall, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers, etc. will all suffice.
Thanks a bunch!

Best advice: Watch a few matches before you pick. You'll pick up on a style you like.

Same boat. I've decided to pick a team this season, so I've been reading a few articles about the process and the different teams. I don't plan on picking until I watch a few games, but right now it's a two horse race between Spurs and Liverpool. The Bill Simmons article made me lean towards Spurs, but I really like the fan dedication and history of Liverpool. We'll see.
Also, for some reason I was really drawn to Newcastle. Apparently their fans are young, rowdy, and drunk, which reminded me of SEC student sections. I'm keeping them as my dark horse, even though they have no chance of winning anything.

QPR posh london types who just go promoted back to the EPL
United fans aren't really from manchester. No one likes them
City are the unlovable losers. The only team to ever win the league and be demoted the next season. Hence the phrase "typical city". too much money for their own good
Arsenal play attractive football but haven't been able to duplicate their successes of five years ago. Always considered to finish near the top but never on top.
Chelsea rich, talented, winners. They were the cool kids in high school that everyone hates.
Liverpool good fan base, for scousers. crumbling stadium, shaky financial platform hinder them, but they still finish in the top five.
aston villa good fan base mediocre team. pretty vanilla.
newcastle rowdy redneck fans. some tough players, not many flashy players. a premier league stalwart who made their return last season.
everton scousers who have developed some good talent but never put together a good enough side to challenge. can beat any of the tops teams on a given day.
spurs good coaching, player development, but lack some key positions. perennially top 6. big feud with arsenal.
I am too tired to do any more.
My advice, don't pick a club yet. the season is two weeks away. Start watching as much as possible and get your own feel for the teams. You will figure out which teams you like and those that you don't.

Liverpool had the rowdiest fans in Europe 30 years ago, but the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters put the clamps on hooliganism and crowd control. Newcastle probably has the rowdiest fans now, but they still don't compare to some of the Latin American fan bases.
I'll try some NFL analogies, not sure how well this will work...
Man U = Cowboys - just don't pick them
Liverpool = Packers - Deep rooted, lots of past success, always in the mix
Chelsea = Patriots - most talented, wealthy and better behaved fan base
Arsenal = Chargers - good looking offense, questionable defense, full of young talent but let veterans go
Manchester City = Redskins - mix of bandwagon fans and long-time ones, ownership with deep pockets but uses it wastefully
Everton = Colts - knowledgeable fans, well managed, to US fans Tim Howard has the universal appeal of Peyton Manning
Aston Villa = Bears - Main fan base in a big industrial city, very hot and cold
Newcastle = Eagles - Probably the rowdiest fan base, usually in the mix, give criminal players second chances
Fulham = Cardinals - everyone forgets about them, but sometimes they can catch you by surprise
Stoke = Ravens - they might not score that much, but you'll be black and blue after the game
Tottenham Hotspur = Jets - little brother from biggest city, make a lot of noise but never break into the elite
Wigan = Bills - just sad (I don't know how they avoided relegation)
Sunderland = Seahawks - kind of "out there", but good fans
Wolverhampton = Texans - New kid on the block, fold under pressure
Bolton = Bucs - smaller fan base, exciting young players, surprisingly good last year but folded in the end

Never pick a club to support based on a player (or Manager) you like. Chances are, that player will play for someone else... especially these days.
Pick based on style of play, coolness of badge/songs/colors/history
Or just Bandwagon and pick a team that you know will compete in Champion's League every year and will be Top 3 in the league most seasons.
Bundesliga - Bayern Munich/Schalke/Bremen/Hamburg
Ligue 1 - Olyimpique Lyon/Olyimpique Marseille/ Paris Saint-Germaine
La Liga - Real Madrid/Barcelona/Valencia
EPL - Manchester United/Man City/Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool
Serie A - Inter Milan/AC Milan/AS Roma/Juventus
SPL - Rangers/Celtic
Eredivisie - Ajax/Feynoord/PSV Eindhoven

Are the Mets and Cubs as profilgate as City? While those comparisons might satisfy the fan side, the fiance side can't be ignored.

The Mets have spent outrageously over the last 10-20 years for 0 gain. The Cubs spend wastefully as well.
frick the Mets, but on a finance side, that's what i was getting at

I don't follow baseball so I didn't know the Cubs and Mets were big spenders. I guess it's not a surprise considering their markets.

The Mets are/were unbelievable spenders, now, they're in financial ruin.
Cubs spend just terrible, terrible money.

I like the NFL comparison alot. Most of them are pretty dead on.
Just a few examples but may be more in depth:
Manchester United - Don't pick them unless you want to be hated. So much like the Yankees. Arrogant and pompous but somewhat deserving of it as they are one of the two most successful teams in 1st division history. Main rivalries are with City and Liverpool. The Northwest derby with Pool is probably the biggest rivalry in the English game, with players not being sold from one club to another since the 1964 Phil Chisnall transfer from United to Liverpool. They are the international face of football and the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the English game.
Liverpool (I'll try to be objective) - Very working class fan base that is very true to its history and roots. The locker room, boot room, and team meeting rooms are almost completely unchanged since they were built in the 1880's (Everton used it back then). Their fans are known as very loud and raucous, especially if its at night when Liverpool are playing in a Champion's League game. The team is one of the most successful in the English game (18 titles) and in European play (5 European cups). The team is famous for never giving up in the face of insurmountable odds and this is reflected by the fans when they sing the teams anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone," especially when they are down a few goals. As you can imagine this has made for some incredible comeback wins (a few recent ones being Champions League final 2005, and FA final in 2006).
Chelsea - Their fans used to be one of the most feared in the game, but now they cater to the upper class of London. Bought Torres for 50mil (rofl). Very recent success in domestic play but little to no history to speak of.
Arsenal - Probably the most fun team to watch play. Very attacking and fluid. Lots of history. Tons of young talent and a terrific coach (I dont care what you say about Wenger - he's great). The boys of the royal family are Arsenal supporters which is pretty cool. Always successful domestically and abroad, though have had a recent trophy drought. Financially the the most well off team in England.
Spurs - Coming on strong as a contender in the near future. Hostorically have a been a pretty attacking team so they're fun to watch as long as they aren't getting beaten on the break. Had an incredibly cinderella season in Europe last year which was exciting for all EPL fans but fell just short. Pretty heated rivalry with Arsenal and recently seem to spoil the party for them in the derby game.
Newcastle - These fans make United's arrogance look like Jesus washing his disciple's feet. Very successful in the 90s and it went to their head. They do have some of the rowdiest fans in the sountry though and that kind of passion can inspire some incredible games (youtube their 4 goal comeback against the gunners last season). Used to have a rivalry with United almost as bad as Liverpools but its died down lately since they havent been in the top flight. Overall a good choice if you want to be a fan of a team that isnt the "top 4" but will likely soon compete to be there.
Manchester City - Red headed stepchild to their big brothers cross town. Have been the Cubs of the EPL for awhile but finally ended their trophy drought last season with an FA cup win on an unforgettable run, beating United 1-0 in the semi-finals to make one of the most memorable derby games in City history. Mancini plays a very Italian type game so It can be boring at times, but when City decide to attack it can be electric. Their fans do this jump up and down thing with their backs to the field that they got from French football and it looks really cool. Sorry, couldn't leave out that last part, I think its awesome.

As a guy that was pretty much in your shoes 2 years ago, my suggestion would be to pick a team that regularly appears on ESPN or FSC. If you try to pick an up and coming underdog to not appear bandwagonish, you might have a tough time keeping up with the league with the lack of coverage of your team. That is a big reason I picked Arsenal. That and Arsenal is a cool word.

Pull for a team with Americans. Fulham (Dempsey), Bolton (Holden), Everton (Howard), and don't be afraid to look outside of England. Espn3 shows Serie A and Bundesliga matches with English commentary. Bundesliga is an open style of play with some of the best young talent in the world.
I'd Wikipedia team USA and find the players clubs. Go from there.
Oh, and Fulham. Pick them
