Just wait until we start dominating. You'll have the following types walking around Europe on their summer vacation with "USA World Cup Champion 2026" t-shirts:

That is Europe's nightmare. The end of days, if you will.

I cannot wait for that. Can you imagine your standard-issue Alabama or Ohio State fan walking around Munich or London or Rome proudly sporting their $500 worth of brand new WC champion gear in all its polyester and stretch-waist glory? It'd cause a half-dozen heart attacks.

I get his point about the hipster douches and see where he is coming from there (especially in NYC). The rest of it just reeks of insecurity and small penis syndrome.

We will, once again, have by far the most fans at this World Cup outside the host country. We will, once again, bring by far the most money to the host country at this World Cup. Take our money and STFU.

Besides that, they really, really don't want the bulk of American fandom to get involved in soccer. They don't want to deal with Raiders fans (or pretty much any NFL team), Phillies fans, Dodgers fans, SEC fans, Big XII fans, Wisconsin fans, etc, etc in a big-time atmosphere with national pride or big league championships on the line. Cutting balls off (UT/OU), murder (Alabama/Auburn), rioting (take your pick of about a dozen cities), huge fights, bottle throwing, stabbings, and on and on. I bet they'd prefer us nice and docile and upper-middle class as the great majority of American soccer fans are right now.

What?

I was disappointed that so many people in the comments agreed with him.

The avg European soccer fan would kick the shite out of even the most hardcore American sports fans. Eagles fans would shite themselves if they confronted Ultras.

there's a peculiar species of fan here whose passion for soccer seems to be less about 22 men chasing a ball up and down a field and more about its intellectual and cosmopolitan qualities.
Can't argue with him there. Having spent more of my adult life in England than in the US, I can say that some - most - American soccer fans are. . . trying too hard.

Not a troll, I just worded phrased it (very) poorly. I was trying to illustrate that the average European soccer fan doesn't have a terrible lot of exposure to the average American sports fan. They're just obnoxious f*cksticks, and it'd be hilarious to see people like Harvey Updike take soccer seriously.

Also, a little besides the point, I think the ultra thing is overblown. Yea, they're not people you want to mess with, but there just aren't all that many of them.

What the hell are you talking about? Crazy incidences at sporting events here are super rare.

Also I think people seriously overestimate how much the world will care if the US wins the WC. As in the vast majority of people will not give a shite.

Then you are clueless

American sports fans could learn a few things from Europeans when it comes being loyal and passionate fans.

I could be wrong, but I think a lot of that has to do with how little fans travel in pro sports. I know college fans will travel, but those tend to be more older educated crowed. Most incidents in America come from one or two drunks not groups.

Sounds like the kinda guy who would complain if we "americanized" the game... just an a-hole in general

for the record, I typically only really use football when trying to piss off my soccerphobe friends...

I think the reason is that (pardon the expression) American professional teams have no history.

I don't disagree with this that much. I think it hurts that a lot of working-class fans have basically been priced out attending a lot of events, especially big games. Jim Bob from Altoona can't afford to go to more than one or two Steelers games a year.

As a rule, team fealty in our big cities is absolutely awful, with only a few exceptions (like the 49ers).

Still, there are some extremely loyal college football fanbases in the states - don't discount them so easily. I don't know how many other programs could have taken what Penn State did and still pack 100,000+ every weekend. Nebraska has that 50+ year sell out streak in an 80,000+ person stadium. Notre Dame has about a 45 year sell out streak if I remember correctly. Are they as passionate as Dinamo fans? No, of course not. We also don't have a century of ethnic divide and war funneled into a soccer team. Instead, we funnel our efforts into real war

Also, when I said "they're just obnoxious f*cksticks", I was referring to some American fanbases, not European fans - just wanted to clear that up.

I can understand some of his points. Before this board was created and soccer and football fans battled it out on the MSB someone linked a clip of Portland and Seattle fans of their MLS teams and I couldn't help but think they were deliberately trying to be European, didn't seem like organic fandom at all.

I will agree that "history" has to do with fan rivalry, be it club or national. They do have some big rivalries in the US, but I would guess unless its two cities that are close, or in the same city, the fans don't interact. I think that has to do with Americans not utilizing public transportation enough, and stadiums built in suburbs.

If you mean no history of political or regional attachment, then yes, that could certainly play a factor.

If you mean no athletic history, then some certainly do. There are a lot of professional baseball teams (Yankees, Red Sox, Reds, Pirates, Indians, Orioles, Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers, White Sox, Giants, Tigers, Cardinals, etc) that have been around for 100 - 140 years. Quite a few NFL teams have been around for 90 - 100 years. Of course, no one can get that revved up for baseball unless you're a Dodgers fan and you want to stab some Giants fan in the outfield bleachers.
