Growing up as a soccer fan in England, I've witnessed my fair share of horrors. I've seen shocking acts of violence, overheard hundreds of abusive chants and watched Pelé retire to sell erectile dysfunction pills.
Over the years, I've been angered, saddened and ashamed by these things. But through it all, my love for soccer remained undimmed.

But lately, I've discovered there's a new scourge on my beloved game that I simply cannot tolerate: Americans.

On a recent weekend, I went to a bar to watch the UEFA Champions League final and found myself stationed next to a soccer fan wearing a replica Arsenal jersey, a team scarf around his neck and a pair of Dr. Martens lace-ups. He looked like he he'd been born and raised along the Holloway Road. In fact, he was from Virginia.

The whole thing seemed to be less an expression of genuine fandom and more like an elaborate piece of performance art. Didn't we fight a war so you guys wouldn't have to take cues on how to behave from London?

So, acting/dressing like English fans would is bad.

Not to mention the fact that your fans happily refer to Team USA captain Clint Dempsey by the nickname "Deuce." Deuce?! This is international soccer, not "Top Gun."

And so is doing things a little different than they do in Europe.

Makes sense.

I actually do think it's a little weird to say things like "pitch" and "kit" or to refer to the game as "futbol" when speaking English. Stupid article, though.

That was the funniest part of the article. One the one hand, American soccer fans get called out for following European customs and then later in the same article, they get called out for not following them.

I agree with him to an extent. It does feel like a show at times, at least the American anti-MLS eurosnobs do.

The 2nd to last paragraph tells the real story though. He's jealous of our American optimism.

frick this guy.

Was going to post something about his contradictions. He's got his knickers in a bunch about how Americans are unoriginal, and then bitches about how the ways in which we are original aren't like the rest of the world. Seems like a poorly constructed troll attempt to me.

Even worse.

... your soccer fanatics have taken to aping the behavior of our fans from across the pond.

The scarves thing is an obvious example, but it's far from the only one. There's the self-conscious use of terms like "pitch," "match" and "kit," the songs lifted directly from English soccer stadiums, and even the appropriation of terrace couture.

He gets mad at us for using the right terminology.

Then gets mad at us when we don't.

Are you sure?

American football:

A fullback is full back?
A halfback is half back?

Come on man, some names correspond to different times, and centres and fulls are correct, IMO.

It´s football, and not soccer, just by fricking logic.

the PK thing is normal. Everybody assigns ´siglas´to EVERYTHING in this country. EPL, BPL, etc.... I don´t know what ´siglas´ is in Ënglish, sorry...

These soccer snobs are so intent on maintaining an aura of authenticity that when they make a slip-up or use an incorrect or ill-advised term, I feel compelled to pounce on them with all the force of a Roy Keane challenge.

What a pretentious douche. He complains about us not making the sport American enough and then complains about when we do. What a fricking tool.

This made me

To be fair to the author, I do get where he's coming from, particularly with the aforementioned anti-MLS crowd. If you ever notice, those are the types that, for some reason or another, begin to talk with the slightest hint of their favorite league's accent when discussing. Nothing wrong with being a fan of great teams abroad, but don't be a pompous arse because I enjoy watching the Sounders from time to time.

Hey English people how about you worry less about how another country's fans act and more about your team getting out of your World Cup group. Remember the time your newspaper said how easy the group you were for the 2010 World Cup was and you didn't even win it? Yeah that was fun.

English fans are so scared of when the U.S. will make it as a team, they've resorted to critiquing how we cheer. Brush your teeth and shut the frick you limey bastards.

Brits are hilarious. Europeans in general love to throw out that Americans are egotistical and what-not, but Europe is just as bad, if not worse.

The superiority complex, despite very little to feel superior about, is just fantastic.

Just wait until we start dominating. You'll have the following types walking around Europe on their summer vacation with "USA World Cup Champion 2026" t-shirts:

That is Europe's nightmare. The end of days, if you will.

To be fair, I always thought the scarf thing was pretty lame.

Stupid article, though.
