My son will be going through the U10 player placement process with BRSC next week. I understand it’s not a full player placement due to LSA rules (can’t do that till U11 apparently).

Can anybody give me any insight into how this all works? What skills are they evaluating? What kind of drills are they going to run?

I’m just trying to prepare him as much as I can. He’s only ever played rec league but is generally the best player on the pitch at that level. He has a ton of fun and is super competitive so he’s excited about trying a higher level.

The best advice is not tell little ScopeCreep or anyone else he is the best player on the team. Do stand and watch practices, tell the coach you know the best formations and drills.

Yeah, I got that side covered. I’m not some rabid sports-parent. I’m willing to support his competitive ambitions as far as he wants to take this. I am definitely not pushing him or getting involved in the coaching.

Good, because you won't be getting quality coaching at BRSC. It is literally set up to be a money pit for upper-middle class parents who need someone to babysit their kids.

The first "success story" that was developed in BRSC will be just that... the first success story.

Just tell him to go out there and have fun. That’s the best advice you can give him.

At U10 boys club coaches will be looking for mostly technical skills.

Can he complete basic ball handling skills (lunge, step-over, shuffle, different "pull V" moves) while going slow and then how fast can he go when he messes up.

Passing and Receiving - does he lock his ankle while passing with the inside of his foot and does the same receiving where he has the left the ball in front of him for his next pass.

Aggression towards the ball on defense and focus on what the coach is saying during instructions.

Disagree completely. There have been plenty of kids that came through BRSC and went on to play in college. Is anyone going through BRSC going to play in Europe? Of course not. But neither is anyone from the Fire, Cajun Rush, or anywhere else in the state.

Oh no, $1200 to play soccer in the fall and spring. so much money there. It's about $300 to play rec ball for the fall and spring.

I've seen the progression in my kids that are in it, and the most important thing to me is that both of them love it and enjoy practice, which I think is very important.
The idea that either of them, or anyone else in the league is going to play in college much less professionally isn't something that i think about b/c it's highly unlikely. If you're good enough to be a professional athlete in any sport, it won't matter what youth program you played in. You either have the physical tools capable of reaching that level or you don't, and if you do, better clubs/programs will find you.

and to answer your question OP, the player placement isn't much of anything at all. They aren't making any decision on anything in those two days, unless your kid is obviously really good and they are positive he should be playing a year up. Other than that, it's just to expose them to how they practice.

First touch, how fast he can possess it, how well he gets his head up to find a pass or move with the ball, how well he moves or turns with the ball and can he put his pass on the correct foot of his teammate.

Just my guess. U10 is Academy in most clubs…but it’s better to be on the team then to try out at U11. BRSC is a fine club. Hopefully there are a group of talented kids his age.

What the hell are you basing this on? And what is your definition of success story? Please name a better soccer club in Baton Rouge.

Jason Garey was a Hermann award winner, played in the MLS, and is a product of BRSC. Is that successful enough?

Broski is both right and wrong.

If you live in Houston and play u12 for the Houston Dynamo MLS Academy you’re going to be coached by an A Licensed coach. The kids are going to be doing pattern play and phases of the game.

If you live in Baton Rouge, your u12 BRSC team will have a D Licensed coach and likely be learning fundamentals then scrimmaging.

BRSC is the best coaching in Baton Rouge. It’s not a waste, but from a larger perspective it’s not great either.

That’s the price of living in a smaller market.

Agreed. It’s not a waste if you live in BR. It also depends what your goal is. If the goal is getting a college scholarship, it can definitely happen at BRSC. If the goal is to play professionally, then you need to be in a much larger market.

That is starting to change with the addition of MLS NEXT for boys and the start of Girls Academy (starting next spring) through LATDP Elite. In fact, several players from MLS NEXT have been scouted and regularly train with MLS Academies due to their play this season.

There are a few A Licensed coaches with BRSC.

But yes of course you'd get a lot more out of playing in the Houston Dynamo Academy in Houston than compared to BRSC.
