Not in Orleans Parish itself.

I enjoy living in Metairie, and Old Metairie is nice.

OK. But why should you 'handle it' when you have choices to go somewhere better? The OP sounds like he has some choices to make.

Nothing about Louisiana makes me want to voluntarily move there. I'll stick to visiting.

I was born in New Orleans but haven't lived there for 13 years. Even though I no longer live in Louisiana I am within easy driving distance of the city but I seldom find reason to return.

I often recall New Orleans with great fondness but most of that relates to family and friends who remain there. It's highly unlikely I would ever return as a full-time resident.

Retire in Bay St Louis, it’s only an hour away...and much safer on this side of the Pearl.

I live in New Orleans and love it. If you have enough money, there's no better place to live.

Depends on what you value in life. For some the juice is worth the squeeze. Different strokes for different folks. I just wish the city’s residents would elect a more competent government.

Bay St. Louis is a great spot for someone wanting a slower pace of life by the sea with the option of coming into town whenever they want.

I-10 through New Orleans East may be the most depressing freeway ride in the country...certainly in the south.

The main way I could see living there was if I was a yuppie making huge bank and could really enjoy things. The single biggest thing IMHO would be that I would need to rent and be able to pull up stakes if the local government got too oppressive.

I couldn’t see it in my current state where I own a home and have kids. That would make it decidedly harder to relocate if shite went sideways.

Yeah but you fly over the bad areas on I-10 EB and feel bad while doing it.

I really like the NOLA area......my issue is it brings out my hedonistic tendencies.....I visit every few years for the food and what not.....the more I mull this over, stay the hell away and just visit infrequently.

Have you considered Fla for the weather and there is no personal income tax in Florida? Or consider Asheville NC.? Or Colorado? My PT moved there and she loves it.
I've lived on the West Coast for the past 27 years. My daughters live in the L.A. area and my son lives in the Silicon Valley. If we don't return to New Orleans we'll stay out West.

I only visited once but it made an impact on how I live now. I was about 10 when we visited a relative with a camp on the beach. I remember the design of the open kitchen/living room with almost nothing but windows facing the water from floor to ceiling.
That's how I designed my house.

Not if you like statues.

Here's what you do:
Buy an offroad vehicle, GX470 is extremely buildable
Move to aforementioned places
Enjoy the mountains or desert or both

Thought about that but don't feel like dealing with Hurricane season every year in my retirement years.

I did at one time. Prior to Katrina. And at one time, I also vowed I’d go back to live.

Now? Not on a fricking dare. These days, I’m leaning more toward spending my older years in the vicinity of Hammond. I’ve always liked that area.
