Retire out west. Utah is the tits - visit New Orleans in the winter when you can grab a 4.5 star hotel for $109 a night on Hotwire and eat at the greatest restaurants in the world using the bargain Revillon holiday menus.

Visit roughly 5 times a year with my dad from Ocean Springs. It’s fun as a visitor but hell if you live there. You always feel like you’ve escaped once you get on I-10

Both my parents born and raised in NOLA. I understand your pull towards NOLA. Others can chime in of recent areas to live or not. It can be majestic with great restaurants and culture.
Have you considered Fla for the weather and there is no personal income tax in Florida? Or consider Asheville NC.? Or Colorado? My PT moved there and she loves it.

depends what sort of lifestyle you want to live.
If it is actual city living, it is very easy to live in your own bubble in the cbd or warehouse district enjoying the city's resturants and bars and festivals (that would also require condo living. I could see it being very alluring to single young professionals and retirees not raising a family
ETA: I live in the CBD

I currently live in New Orleans and I love it. Moved back here from Houston. I've never been robbed or had something stolen from me. The crime is real but very overblown. Sure I sometimes get frustrated at the inept local government and terrible infrastructure - but the culture, food, restaurants, festivals, people, etc. outweigh the bad. If you live in a nice uptown area you and your family will love it.

I Would in New Orleans but I cannot because I have a shellfish allergy. I would die!
Without the allergy, sure why not, fun city!

quote:Agreed. If I was going to move to the suburbs, I'd just move to Utah. If I move to New Orleans it will definitely be somewhere in the city proper. I just love that city. Hell, I'd move to the French Quarter if it wasn't for the smell.
My two cents is DO NOT move to a suburb. If you're going to be there, then be there!

Lived in Lakeview for 15 years, never had any problems. I'd live around Audubon Park, around Henry Clay, somewhere in there. Always liked that area.

I would have a second home there and live in an area near my niece, who loves it and fits right in with the city. I would have my boat somewhere nearby and if I felt like fishing just head out. If not, take in some music or food. Tired of suburbia, hop-in-the-car and drives miles to get to anything.

Orleans Parish has high taxes, high crime, high corruption, and broken down infrastructure. If you like paying taxes, boiling drinking water, damaging your car in pot holes, parking tickets, making home and auto insurance claims for breaking and entering with a theft kicker, and flooding, go for it.
Better solution is to live in suburbia and commute to fun, frivolity, dining, historic, and touristy attractions.
Of course since they took the statues down, I spend 99% of my New Orleans time driving on either I-10 or 610 connecting to other suburbs.

If I was a wealthy retired baw, I would definitely have a second home (condo) in the city, likely within walking distance of the dome.
Put my boat in the marina on the lake.
Then have my other home in a setting with more tolerable summers like Chicago or Denver. Live part of the year up north and part down south.

move to north shore unless you will be living off welfare/ soc sec
why would you intentionally move into a toilet by choice?

No. I've been a couple of times for business years and years ago.
Pretty sure I won't be returning. Don't mean to disparage people's hometown.

I won't ever understand the appeal to NOLA. That place is a shite hole and it stinks.

If you can afford to live in actual downtown NOLA (I am talking interstate side of poydras) you can enjoy all of those things, hell you can walk to most of those things...you won't flood, you won't get broken into, you won't deal with potholes, parking tickets
You hit those issues more when you live on the outskirts of downtown and lakview where the actual housing is

Yes one of the greatest cities on earth.

This is why I wouldn’t want to live in the suburbs. The traffic getting into and out of NOLA is a major PITA. However, inside the city, the solid street grid makes getting around traffic a breeze outside of Mardi Gras (only because it closes so many streets).
The city itself is remarkably small, so travel time between where you are and where you want to be is almost negligible if you live in town. Coming from the suburbs (especially on the north shore) it’s a real hassle that’s rarely worth the time and tolls. Plus, it’s not like the schools, drainage, or property crime are that much better in Jefferson Parish.

I can’t imagine that you value my opinion here, but I recently moved back to Louisiana after a long time away, and the things you think might suck sure do suck, but I’m so happy to be back home. Go for it. People who crap on it are just the people who can’t handle it.
